I became a Democrat. For the last 28 years I was a registered Independent. Which means I used to get robo calls and other political materials from both parties. I realize that I'll never agree 100 percent with either party, BUT the republican party has moved so far to the right, there's no way I'd ever vote for a republican. All of the moderates have been run out of the party, and I don't see them making a comeback any time soon. It feels kind of weird to finally say... that I'm a liberal Democrat.. Actually, I'm a proud liberal Democrat.

license. I had registered Repub in 1980 because it was
the party of Lincoln. He wouldn't recognize his party
today, thats for sure.

(8,434 posts)Quite simply, it's the wrong time to do so. Everyone that leans slightly blue needs to be fought for at this point.
The bluer our politicians get, the better things will be. We'll just have to drag the reds along with us, kicking and screaming the whole way.

(16,254 posts)I always called myself Independent, but finally realized I never voted for Republicans, so why not be honest and sign up as a Democrat? I've never looked back.
Now, I have finally realized I don't even think like they do, so why was I so stubborn in not declaring myself?
Doesn't it feel good to say you're a proud, liberal Democrat?

(342 posts)I gotta tell you, though, being a progressive or even moderate Democrat during these past few years has been, I suspect, like being a Red Sox fan. Knowing that you're on a great team, knowing that the competition can spend a hell of a lot more money than your team can, and realizing that it might be a long stretch of time where it seems that you just can't win the "big one", you keep the faith and keep working toward that ultimate goal of equality, security and justice for everyone.
I reckon this may very well be our "Field of Dreams" but it's a dream worth chasing.

(37,648 posts)We don't "register" for parties here in Texas, but I call myself an Independent, although I almost always vote Democratic. I don't call myself a Dem. because I don't like EITHER of the major parties, the way they operate.
But I AM a proud liberal on most issues.
Welcome to the good side! You'll find that your views are much more acceptable here than on a right wing blog (although I can't guarantee you won't be called a few names). Also, the people here on DU are very knowledgeable, informed, compassionate, and intelligent. If you want the facts on anything, you'll find someone here who knows them.

(11,087 posts)That's when it seemed to me the Republican party went insane. We independents in Michigan told them we liked McCain much better than Bush. They basically told us to, um, go have sexual intercourse with ourselves. They've just gotten worse since then, and acted proud of their stupidity. Plus, they've run the experiments that prove their policies don't work. Then they ignore the resulting data.

(32,047 posts)In the meantime, I found this story from the washington post facebook feed: "Sen. Olympia Snowe on how the GOP can mend its image among women". Snowe is the Republican senator from Maine who voted for the stimulus alongside her fellow senator Susan Collins. Both were the only republicans who voted for the stimulus. They understand how crazy the GOP has become.
