San Antonio City Council bans Chick-fil-A from revamped airport terminal

Popular chicken-sandwich franchise Chick-fil-A was in plans to join a number of new restaurants in Terminal A at the San Antonio International Airport. But ThinkProgress, a news website from an advocacy organization, reported last week that “the Chick-fil-A Foundation donated $1.8 million to groups that discriminate against the LGBTQ community in 2017, including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.” The next day, reports USA Today, the San Antonio City Council voted Chick-fil-A out of the new terminal plans, and cited the chain’s apparent anti-LGBTQ stance as the reason. This amendment to the original plan was approved by a 6-4 vote.

In a statement, Councilman Roberto Treviño said after the vote: “With this decision, the City Council reaffirmed the work our city has done to become a champion of equality and inclusion. San Antonio is a city full of compassion, and we do not have room in our public facilities for a business with a legacy of anti-LGBTQ behavior. Everyone has a place here, and everyone should feel welcome when they walk through our airport.”

Chick-fil-A was quick to respond in a statement to USA Today: “We wish we had the opportunity to clarify misperceptions about our company prior to the vote. We agree with the councilmember that everyone should feel welcome at Chick-fil-A… In fact, we have welcomed everyone in San Antonio into our 32 local stores for more than 40 years.”

In 2012, Chick-fil-A founder Dan Cathy gave an interview that included the quote: “We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.” The company has previously donated to socially conservative groups like the Marriage And Family Foundation and the Family Research Council.

Which Biblical definition of marriage to which they are referring? As I recall there are some very interesting ones available in the Bible.

“We are very much supportive of the family—the biblical definition of the family unit. We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives.

Besides their corporate anti LGBTQ activism, another very practical reason to keep them out of airports is the fact that they are closed on Sunday. Airports aren’t closed on Sunday, and passengers don’t appreciate having their limited food options limited even further by a closed on Sunday food outlet.

So they can make a bigger profit and donate portions of it to anti-LGBTQ organizations

Drive through line almost wraps its way around the building and it doesn't matter which one I see. Food is okay, service is OK, so what gives?

However being an airport, I would have thought that service would be needed 7 days a week ... and Chick-fil-A won't do that. I get the day of rest thing, but who decided it would be Sunday?

I hate Chick-fil-A for their bigotry. I haven't eaten there in years and have no plans to start.

Really? Because it sound like the city council has a very clear idea about Chick-fil-A and its ownership. While it would seem obvious that consumers should rule our market economy, it often isn't that way. Consumers are being hemmed in more and more by rapacious companies and choices are more and more limited. One of the last redoubts of consumer power is where we spend our dollars. Your dollar is your vote, and spending money at Chick-fil-A is an endorsement, however small, to the Cathy family and its bigotry.

so does my gay brother, and my lesbian co-worker and lesbian supervisor who actually got all of us gift cards for CFA when asked by one of my other co-workers how could she, she basically explained it was like this "I like their food". I replied, me too, thank you for the gift card..
