‘Think of the mothers of sons’: Notre Dame mom begs female students to stop wearing leggings, sparking protests

By Antonia Noori Farzan March 28 at 5:40 AM

While attending Mass at the University of Notre Dame last fall, Maryann White saw something that horrified her: Leggings.

A group of young women, all clad in tight, clingy Spandex and short tops, were sitting directly in front of her and her family.

“I thought of all the other men around and behind us who couldn’t help but see their behinds,” the self-described Catholic mother of four sons wrote in a letter to the editor that was published by the Observer, Notre Dame’s student newspaper, on Monday. “My sons know better than to ogle a woman’s body — certainly when I’m around (and hopefully, also when I’m not). They didn’t stare, and they didn’t comment afterwards. But you couldn’t help but see those blackly naked rear ends. I didn’t want to see them — but they were unavoidable. How much more difficult for young guys to ignore them.”

Begging female students to “think of the mothers of sons the next time you go shopping and consider choosing jeans instead,” White explained in her letter that she had hoped that leggings would eventually go out of style, but that hadn’t happened yet. Maybe, she proposed, Notre Dame women could be the first to start a trend by simply choosing not to wear the wildly popular stretchy pants.

Her plea appears to have had the opposite effect: By way of responding to her complaints, more than 1,000 students at the private Catholic University indicated that they planned on showing up to class in their leggings this week.

Saying people need to "dress better" for Mass, or any religious service, is nothing but the sin of vanity and elitism. Were these young women respectful during Mass? Did they laugh and point and made remarks? No, they prayed and listened to the homily. and probably took the Eucharist.

Who cares what anyone wears to Mass? Why do YOU care? God doesn't. Jesus, God made flesh, states the same in the NT.

'A lost classic of underground cartooning, Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin
Mary is Justin Green’s autobiographical portrayal of his struggle with
religion and his own neuroses. Binky Brown is a young Catholic battling all
the usual problems of adolescence—puberty, parents, and the fear that the
strange ray of energy emanating from his private parts will strike a picture
of the Virgin Mary. Deeply confessional, with artwork that veers wildly
between formalist and hallucinogenic, Binky Brown Meets the Holy Virgin Mary
is the controversial masterpiece that invented the autobiographical graphic
novel."

A couple of years ago I discovered the joy of wearing leggings, although my age and body type advise against them. I wear them with longish tunic tops that cover any offending parts. If anyone takes offense, I hate it for them.

I’m at an age where comfort is more important than what the fashion police dictate. That goes double for shoes. A few years ago some people began dressing down for church. Some churches even had early services for those inclined to dress in shorts and tee shirts, while reserving the later morning for the suit, dresses and tie crowd. I thought it was a smart move to try to stop the exodus of church members who were tired of dressing up on Sunday.....among other reasons.

The lady who was soooo offended at the sight of the Blackley Naked butts should have had her eyes on the cross or at least the pastor. Then she would have had her mind on the subject at hand instead of worrying about her son’s sins all because of the brazen hussies sitting in front of her.
