This is a painful video to watch, but all owners of smaller dogs need to see this. It's already happened to me too, fortunately I was able to save my terrier before the pitbull could fatally injure my dog. There are too many careless pitbull owners out there who cannot control their dogs on a leash.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A 16-year routine for two dog owners from Eltingville ended in horror after the couples Pomeranian was brutally attacked and killed by a passing pit bull who overpowered the child who was walking it. The couple, who spoke to the Advance under the condition their name not be published, said that their beloved dog would commonly follow the female homeowner without a leash as she took out the garbage for the evening.
Its a routine hes always done for 16 years of his life, the husband said.
The couples dog, as shown in the dramatic and gruesome video captured by the familys Ring doorbell on March 16, follows the homeowner and walks to the curb a few feet away before urinating by a mailbox.
The pit bull viciously and unexpectedly latches onto the Pomeranian like a chew toy, the homeowner said, and threw him around.

(3,333 posts)3 pitbulls mauled an older man tearing his ears, nose, and mouth completely off.
On our Nextdoor app, people find/lose dogs daily.
I no longer take my kids for walks around the neighborhood because the dog issue is so out of control.
It's really sad.

This serves an important purpose;
To make people aware of the potential for unexpected behavior with dogs and to show a real life event of such behavior.
The title of the OP made it clear that there is a "horrific video" of the event.
You had the choice to move on and not even click on the thread.
The age demographic for this website skews older, and I mean OLDER.
However, sometimes I wonder if there are any grownups.

(3,635 posts)compared to what pits and aggressive breeds can really do. the little dog died quickly w/a bite to the neck. often pits will maul and rip apart the victim in a grotesque fashion.
the owners and breeders of these fighting dog breeds are the issue.
pits can be nice family pets, but they're bred/prized for the "badass killer" image, so the breed in its current state is fucked.

(3,156 posts)i am not at all defending the owner of the pit, but it's a bit much to expect other pet owners to control their animals if you make zero effort to control your own. let your dog run free? then don't be surprised when something happens to it. it's tragic for the Pom's owners, but all parties involved could have done more to prevent the situation.

(146,317 posts)small dogs never learn them. My next door neighbor has A maltiepoo or a shittypoo or some such dog. She lets it out all the time off-leash. It runs across the street, yaps insanely at dogs being walked on leashes and chases any living thing smaller than itself.
We have asked her many times not to let the dog run loose, but she pays no attention. Our two beagles just ignore her dog, but it causes big problems for many dog walkers. That's why there are leash laws.

(3,156 posts)several years back my wife was bitten by an unsecured small dog that ran from our neighbors yard as she walked down the sidewalk. people with small "harmless" dogs should realize that securing their small dog is as much for that dogs safety as it is for that of others.
right now i have a cat next to me begging to go outside. our new neighbors have a rott that doesn't respect fences, and i know cats don't either, so the cat stays inside unless leashed.
MineralMan
(146,317 posts)with us. Both were indoor/outdoor cats in California, with a cat flap that let them do as they pleased. So, as soon as we moved into our new house, I installed a cat flap in the side door.
Both cats took an early opportunity to go out. One of them got chased by an off-leash German Shepherd almost immediately. The other got lost behind the garage and was frightened.
Neither tried to go out after that, so I latched the cat flap, and they became indoor cats. They never seemed to mind the change. They were apparently happy to sit on the windowsills and watch the outdoors. 14 years later, both kitties have died, and we have two replacement kitties and two dogs. The new kitties have never been outdoors and never will be. The dogs have a flap into our fenced backyard, but the cats never try to follow them out.
Incidentally, the dogs and cats are all buddies. We often find them all sleeping together on the big dog bed in my wife's office.

(4,316 posts)I am glad you posted. I think awareness of the issue of dangerous dogs is important. Maybe there should be a rule to have the dogs muzzled when they are in public. My brother's terrier was killed by a pit bull at an animal hospital right in front of everyone.

(1,718 posts)It's particularly bad in my area especially since so many pitbull puppies end up being given away for free on Craigslist and elsewhere. It's a cycle that just keeps getting worse and nothing is ever done.

(31,261 posts)For ALL dogs. If an owner is caught with an unmuzzled dog, they get fined, with heavier fines for repeat instances. If the muzzle is not secured properly and the animal get out of it and attack someone or another animal, the fine should be stiff. If the dog kill a person or pet, the owner should lose it.

(4,316 posts)They are basically predators with powerful weapon of teeth. They say don't run if an aggressive dog comes after you, and stand like a tree, but I find this would be hard to do. I love all animals, but I got bit by a dog once and I don't fancy playing ninja with other people's dogs.

(31,261 posts)Dogs like yours aren't an issue, but to be fair and have a law that works, anyone taking a dog outside their home or fence enclosure should have it muzzled.

An NYPD spokeswoman said that police responded to the scene on March 16, but that the incident was referred to Civil Court.
A source with knowledge of the Department of Healths investigation into the attack said that the incident is currently being probed.
However, the homeowners are worried about the possibility the dog attacks again.
I worry about other small dogs in our neighborhood and small children as well," he said.
Me and my wife live in fear for ourselves and our kids that he will return to our area, adding that multiple neighbors saw the pit bull in the area following the incident.
I am actively warning all residents on my block with small children and small dogs of the danger but if someone doesnt step in, I fear that next time it might be a child or person, the man said.

(3,635 posts)For those saying the smaller (harmless) dog should be on a leash - makes no difference - the pit still would've overpowered the little girl and been able to kill the small dog. the mother is a dumbass and should face criminal charges.
if someone's negligence allowed my dog to be killed like that, they'd better hide.
pit owners will only learn once they start to face justice.

(32,773 posts)You cannot change thousands of years of evolution. Some breeds are more aggressive, the pit bull being right at the top of the list!
Our wonderful no kill shelter is filled with pit bulls and pit bull mix that people have surrendered and no one wants. Not fair to the animals either. Why not just let the breed die off
