The steep banks on the haul roads placed over the permafrost and muskeg are too steep for calves to cross over. Calves have to follow the adults that leave the meadows, cross any roads, and get into the ocean to escape mosquitoes that can suck a calf dry if it does not escape the swarms. Thank you Center for Biological Diversity.
