President Trump said Friday that next week he would close the southern border, or at least large sections of it, if Mexico does not halt illegal immigration into the United States, repeating a threat he has made before but never with a specific timetable.
In a series of tweets and later during appearances before reporters, Trump did not spell out exactly what a border closing would entail but said it could involve halting all trade between the two countries a prospect that would have profound ramifications for the U.S. economy.
Trump blamed Mexico for a growing flow of illegals entering the United States and cited two large migrant caravans making their way toward the U.S. border.
If they dont stop them, were closing the border, Trump said at an event in Florida. Well close it. And well keep it closed for a long time. Im not playing games. Mexico has to stop it.

Someone commented earlier that several million jobs could be affected if he does this. The moron keeps trying to shoot himself in the foot.

How many times has Trump visited the produce section of a supermarket?
If Trump had any family and friends in Mexico, he'd make sure the door remained open, but just for them.
The walls Trump is building around the U.S.A., physical walls and intellectual walls, deny our freedoms, echoing the Berlin wall.
If they don't harass and inconvenience our fellow U.S. citizens leaving the country, they'll do it when they return, to such an extent that people will think twice about vacationing or doing any kind of business with the outside world.

(146,317 posts)Trump has no idea how busy the border crossings are, almost always for legitimate reasons. Americans go into Mexico for many reasons, and Mexicans come into the United States for an equally varied number of reasons. Many of those crossings are daily occurrences for those who cross.
And that doesn't even discuss all of the commercial traffic across the border, trucks going both ways, laden with merchandise, produce, and other necessities.
Just slamming the border shut would cost many people their livelihoods - legitimate and legal livelihoods.
Trump has no idea. He cares not one whit for all that, and wouldn't listen if someone explained it.
So, he may well just shut the border down. If he does, he will reap the consequences of his action, and it will affect his supporters as well as those who do not support him.
I don't want him to do that, for the reasons described above. On the other hand, if he does it, he will get an object lesson in doing stupid things and the consequences of that.
In reality, he IS playing games - with people's lives and jobs.
