'People are mad': In El Paso, Trump's border closing threat has city on edge

EL PASO, Texas — Dental surgeon Edgar Salazar stood a few feet from slow-moving traffic on an international bridge fretting about the U.S. clients who've stopped coming to his practice amid what the Trump administration has called a U.S. border "crisis."

Clients are postponing appointments or have stopped coming altogether to avoid the traffic backups on the bridges that connect El Paso and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Some fear they'll get stuck on the Mexican side of the border, he said.

"It's causing stress because you don't know what's going to happen, when they are going to issue an order" to shut down the border, said Salazar, whose business is in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, which is across the border from El Paso.

Residents, business people and advocates working with immigrants are feeling the strain amid President Donald Trump's threats to shut down the border and issue threats and deadlines over the past week, but White House staff has wavered on certainty and deadlines.

On Thursday, Trump said he's giving Mexico a "one-year" warning to deter migrants heading to the United States and control the drug flow. He threatened to impose tariffs on cars Mexico exports to the United States.

While the president's threats have loomed, the administration has reduced staffing at ports of entry, closing vehicle lanes for cross border traffic and slowing the inspection process in response to hundreds of migrants arriving daily to the El Paso-southern New Mexico border area.
