Rep. Sharice Davids is one to watch

Re-authorizing the Violence Against Women Act will help ensure that all survivors of violence and abuse can receive the support, protection, and justice they deserve.

I was honored to preside over the House Floor as we passed this historic piece of legislation.

in 1994, along with Rep. Louise Slaughter, the first national law of its kind.

This latest renewal, with significant expansions, is cosponsored by Democratic representative Karen Bass and Republican Ryan Fitzpatrick. Sadly, he’s the only Republican cosponsor.

But thanks and Congrats to all involved.

to preside as it was passed with bipartisan vote. She's native American, of course, and rates of abuse among that general demographic have been horrific.

Ms. Davids is a redoubtable woman, was before she became a congresswoman. Of course, her overall effectiveness as a legislator will absolutely depend on whether we retain control of the house and get control of the senate, but if we do in 2020, she'll be part of big change.

So far her committee assignments are small business and transportation and infrastructure. Btw, she's already sponsored 3 bills; from what I've read, rate of legislative activity in the first year reportedly correlates strongly with effectiveness over the years, so, good start.

Go, Sharice!
