The Federal Communications Commission "vastly undercounts" the number of Americans without access to broadband internet, Microsoft said this week.
The FCC recently estimated that 24.7 million Americans lack access to a broadband connection, but Redmond-based Microsoft argues the actual number of Americans without access is closer to 162 million more than six times the FCC's figure.
Northeast Washington's Ferry County is a prime example. Microsoft said FCC data show that 100 percent of residents there have access to broadband, but Microsoft found that only 2 percent of residents use broadband. Washington has one of the highest rates of broadband usage in the country.
Microsoft Chief Data Analytics Officer John Kahan on Monday called on the FCC to fix its data, which is used by federal, state and local governments to decide where investments should be made to improve broadband access.

Well look at the clown who runs the FCC.

(15,682 posts)internet access to the many areas without it. I don't recall if she put a number to the needs but I remember when she spoke about it.
I don't remember anyone else addressing the need, if there were any.
