Box Office Shocker: Anti-Obama Doc Bests Other New Films on Friday becoming the top-grossing documentary of the year, "2016: Obama's America" earns $2.2 million for the day to outpace "Premium Rush," "Hit & Run" and "The Apparition."
Dinesh DSouza and John Sullivans conservative documentary 2016: Obama's America expanded nationwide Friday to pleasing results, grossing $2.2 million to place No. 4 overall behind a trio of holdovers. Obama's America came in ahead of three other new films opening at the domestic office: Premium Rush, which earned $2 million to come in only No. 8 for the day; offbeat indie comedy Hit & Run, which placed No. 10 with $1.4 million; and Dark Castle's supernatural thriller The Apparition, which grossed $1.2 million to rank 12th.
The anti-Barack Obama film is now the top-grossing documentary of the year (excluding nature docs), besting the $3.5 million earned by Bully.

(29,676 posts)I want to see that. I wonder if 3D Nemo will make me tear up even more than before?
I don't want to see the stupid-sounding 2016 movie. I'd rather support well-written science fiction instead of this crap. Heck, Battlefield Earth sounds like it was a better movie than this dreck.

(954 posts)Considering how many hundreds of millions the SPACs have and that doing this wouldn't be in any way illegal, I almost imagine it being IMPOSSIBLE for them not to try.

(27,453 posts)I have no interest in seeing it. It sounds like a "some people say" documentary rather than anything based in reality.

(5,062 posts)Here are the facts. A family member emailed me this today gloating about this as if it is a sign Obama will lose.
THE FACTS:
This film is not Hollywood. I keep hearing how shocked Hollywood is. This film was not produced, distributed, made or financed in any way by Hollywood.
This film comes out the weekend of the GOP convention. It's being reported that shows are being sold in bulk and in some cases churches are busing in theater goers. Republicans with deep pockets wanted this film to make $$$.
This film was released during a very safe period. Hollywood dumps it's last batch of films out in August because it is safe. The new Bourne movie without Matt Damon took this route. Same with Colin Farrell's TOTAL RECALL remake. EXPENDABLES 2, same thing. They release them late in summer because their is no competition. So, releasing this at the end of the summer during a weekend where there is no major release set is very safe. If they had released this during the weekend of the latest BATMAN movie and it came in at #4, I'd be impressed.
Finally, anyone who tries to tell you this film was viewed by Independents is lying. ANYONE who went to see this film were voting for Romney anyway. This is what Big Super Pac money gets you.

Seriously.
