A new law to help protect victims of domestic abuse went into effect in Pennsylvania Wednesday.

Act 79 prevents people convicted of domestic violence from having guns. Those convicted must now turn in their weapons to law enforcement within 24 hours, instead of 60 days.

"We know there's a huge connection between domestic violence and access to firearms as well as domestic violence and mass shootings," said Pa. Rep. Mike Schlossberg.

The law states that after a final protection from abuse (PFA) order is filed against an abuser, that person must surrender all firearms to the authorities or to a licensed gun dealer within 24 hours.
