I'm not looking for a miracle here, just if anyone has found any techniques that work to trick your mind into not even knowing of the existence of the orange menace for some reasonable amount of time to allow some of the anger and frustration to subside.
Like, maybe for an hour or so, if I could exist in some rarefied mental state wherein there is no such entity as Король мудак.
One thing I've found useful is the ancient Buddhist practice of Maraṇasati (mindfulness of death, death awareness), in which the meditator visualizes and contemplates the various aspects of a human corpse as it goes through the process of decomposition. Conveniently, when an image or thought of Individual 1 arises, it is a simple matter to then apply the visualization techniques involved in the Maranasati practice to those images. It's quite soothing, actually.

Of course, there's always the option to go with the old standard methods: drugs and alcohol. They still work as good as ever. But one generally pays a price for using these things to the extent that you actually blot out the existence of the wretched goddamn orange fascist from your mind. And, I mean, I have to work and stuff, so I can't just get obliterated on drugs and booze all the time.
So yeah, if anyone has any other hints or tips for ways to temporarily escape from the constant awareness of this fucking abomination squatting in our WH, can you share? TIA

(30,613 posts)I use art for that.
In the past, I was advised to try that Buddhist practice of thinking about death. I went quickly down a slippery slope to thoughts of suicide. Not a good idea for me.

Take some lesson and walk a golf course. You'll get away from the media-saturation of our society and you'll be surrounded by beautiful nature. The walk is at least 4-5 miles, you'll meet interesting people and your focus will primarily be on your next shot.
It's always astounding to me that the 4 hours or so it takes to play a round take me out of all the issues in life. All that seems to matter is where the little white ball is going.
Inevitably, reality returns when you get back to the parking lot. But for those few hours, I don't think about Trump, our country, work or any other troubles in my life.

(32,683 posts)To observe any behavior, one has to focus on the behavior and remove all judgement so your observations are not tainted. That is what I now do with politics and it is working for me. I know he is an evil ass, but I try best that I can to just focus on the behavior. I can write my conclusions when it is all over. That way I don't miss anything important.

Hike, bike, or - with proper equipment - row or climb. Work up a sweat. Notice the beauty and magic!

This may feel like a dark chapter but any story has its highs and lows but it continues. Yes, we are in a low but we have been lower. We have had tougher times, we have had more to fear. We have lived through slavery, the Holocaust and segregation.
We have always come out at the other end better and stronger. We are moving in a direction of diversity and inclusion. No-one ever said it would be easy. We are just in the throes of the uneasy path of change.
