really pissing me off. Just saw the one where the vineyard-owning gazillionaire's daughter is explaining how he can transfer "4000" acres to her and, with BDO's help, avoid all estate taxes. Give me an effin' break!
Do we really need this slickly-produced celebration of obscene wealth while people are dying for lack of medical care, teachers can't live on what they're paid and children are being stored in cages? Really?
Tax the rich or we're gonna have to eat them.
ON EDIT: BDO = "Binder Dijker Otte", an international accounting and business consulting firm. I see multiple commercials for them each day.

(37,449 posts)they are cheap and annoying but make sure you hit all those conservative stations. For months on end in NY they would air them against Democrats. Not everybody has satellite radio and usually they follow the strongest signal station in the area. They also hit the local affiliates on cable with quick ads. A barrage the month before the election and sporadic before its softens them up.

(28,795 posts)i mute. i switch channels. anything but watch.
and sometimes it's more commercials than content. plus the channels collude so they're all running commercials at the same time!
maddening. advertising permeates every aspect of life and we never talk about that. it's at the gas station, it's in the cab, at the grocery store. and because of greed, it just gets worse and worse.

(21,675 posts)The one thing that bothers me the most about going from dish to streaming is that you CAN'T FF THE COMMERCIALS anymore! Now, all I can do is mute them, but I have to be right there to do that. If I leave the room and a commercial comes on, it is almost 3 times the volume of the regular program so you must hear it. I refuse to pay another $50 a month to have the ability to remove commercials, so guess I'm stuck.
robbob
(3,530 posts)let the program build up some time in the cache and then you can ff? I do that when Im watching a live sporting event on cable; Ill go fix dinner while the game is paused and then I dont have to watch any more commercials.
I have DirecTVNow, and it doesn't allow me to do any of that.

(49,002 posts)Think this: every one of those ad spots is telling the middle class and poor that they are locked out of rich people's tax tools. Good for Democrats.
Wealth and income inequality is the biggest of the least talked about issues tearing at the fabric of US society.

(59,503 posts)Like you, I have seen this ad far too often -- and I do not have a vineyard to pass to my kids! One would think that the small number of people with those small businesses likely have accountants/ financial planners who they use for audits, taxes etc. Hard to believe that an ad of this type would cause them to consider changing unless they were already dissatisfied.

(823 posts)the loopholes/dodges/advantages that are allowed under our current tax code. For example: The estate and gift tax total exemption per individual for 2019 is $11,400,000 and $22,800,000 for a couple. I can not blame someone for legally using the system in place to give wealth to their family, friends or whoever they want with no tax penalty to those who receive the gift. Our system is broken. Elect representation that will address the system and maybe spend less political capital attacking those who legally use the system to avoid tax obligations because it is LEGAL to do so. It is fiscally irresponsible for folks with money to not use the system to their advantage. So lets remove the advantage, fix the system and put everyone on an equal footing.

(25,857 posts)I watch plenty of stuff via the internet, but without commercials.
I'm now nearly 11 years without regular TV, and I doubt I will ever go back. When I'm in a hotel, I occasionally turn on the TV for a bit, but within 30 minutes have to turn it back off because the commercials are so annoying.
cannabis_flower
(3,764 posts)There are commercials on the internet too. Every time I watch YouTube I see commercials.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,857 posts)Not on what I watch on YouTube.
I mostly watch shows on Hulu, Amazon Prime, or Netflix. No commercials there.
Also, when one of the networks puts up a show to be watched on the internet there are no commercials. I so rarely see them that I generally have zero patience for them any more. For one thing, I can watch significantly more content because 30% of the time isn't taken up by ads.
Not sure why you're seeing commercials on YouTube.

cannabis_flower
(3,764 posts)And I believe you don't get commercials when you pay. I pay for Hulu and I get commercials.
The YouTube ones come on before videos sometimes. Sometimes they say video will play after ad. Sometimes you can skip ad in a certain number of seconds. Sometimes with long videos there are several ads throughout the video.
PoindexterOglethorpe
(25,857 posts)I pay for Hulu without commercials. I kind of think they have more than one level to pay for. I originally did the free Hulu and both got tired of the commercials and the limited offerings.
I was completely unaware of a pay YouTube service. I'm not about to pay and still watch commercials.

(23,670 posts)A sexual harassment wife beater, abuser, FIRED by FOX, and yet MSNBC allows a commercial on for which he is a spokesperson. Forget the product, it's something I would never purchase anyway.
In May 2015, court transcripts from O'Reilly's custody trial with ex-wife Maureen McPhilmy revealed signs of domestic violence within the householdO'Reilly's daughter testified to a forensic examiner that she witnessed O'Reilly choking McPhilmy and dragging her down the stairs of their home by her neck, apparently unaware that their daughter was watching.[158][159][160] Following this allegation, O'Reilly issued a statement through his attorney describing the account as "100% false" and declined to comment further in order "to respect the court-mandated confidentiality put in place to protect [his] children".[160][161] In February 2016, O'Reilly lost a bid for custody of both of his children.[162]

(24,324 posts)STOP watching the boob tube... the so-called NEWS shows aren;t news shows anyway. They are just entertainment.
Just think about it---- "CNN" Cable News Network,. but is is NOT a news outlet. it is a Whoopie Goldberg show with a newsie-looking set
How often do you see ANYTHING except American national political entertainment there?? And it is the same three things over and over and over and over and over.. (How do I know? Well, 5 TVs are on at the gym. LOL)))
It's a drug.
I don't watch ANY TV or online news entertainment at all after finally cutting everything off. There are plenty of places to find ouot wjhat is going on without it..

(38,313 posts)Our television plays DVDs and Netflix. That's all it does. No cable, no satellite, no broadcast.
I may be cranky, but not because of television commercials. They no longer exist in my private universe.
It's cheap too. My wife and I have an inexpensive DSL connection, which we'd have anyways because we need it for work, and the lowest cost Netflix subscription.
Between Netflix, DVDs I find in thrift stores, and the local Redbox, we haven't run out of stuff to watch on television yet.
Hell yes, I'm an evangelist against traditional television. Television "news" is especially worthless and hazardous to one's mental health.
Without television Trump wouldn't be President.

(4,448 posts)I don't have a problem with their existence. Yes this company handles the money of wealthy people, but they employee thousands and thousands of regular folks like you and me.
And yes. These company do need to advertise. They want to keep the company running, those folks employed and part of that is keeping the company name in the public's mindshare. (the basic goal of advertising)
But their ads. Many they are so dooschey. They piss me off too.
