Brooklyn parents sue over measles vaccination mandate

A group of Brooklyn parents on Monday sued New York City over an emergency order requiring measles vaccinations, according to ABC News.

In the lawsuit, the parents seek a temporary restraining order argue that the New York City Department of Health’s emergency order was “arbitrary and capricious.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) issued the order last week, requiring everyone over the age of 6 months who lives within ZIP codes associated with the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn receive the measles vaccination. The order also applies to people who work or attend school in the area.

The plaintiffs argue there is “insufficient evidence of a measles epidemic or dangerous outbreak to justify" the order and that the city has not taken the least-restrictive measures possible to combat measles.

that only suburban white folks are this stupid?

A few rabbis have pushed anti-vaxing and it's taken hold, but "officially" all branches of Judaism support vaccinations. This is a terrible situation that is growing in places where it shouldn't.

(Any observant Jews who wish to correct my understanding are welcome to do so.)

https://www.ou.org/news/statement-vaccinations-ou-rabbinical-council-america/

Orthodox Jewish parents, like responsible parents across the United States, overwhelmingly vaccinate their children against measles, mumps, rubella, polio and the other childhood diseases for which inoculations are now almost miraculously commonplace. As in many communities, a small minority of parents chooses not to do so. The ongoing measles outbreak demonstrates how this could bear very serious consequences, not only for their own children but others’ too, especially those medically unable to be vaccinated. The Orthodox Union (OU) and the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA) strongly urge all parents to vaccinate their healthy children on the timetable recommended by their pediatrician.

Judaism places the highest value on preserving human life. It is well known that those facing even a potential life or death situation are instructed to set aside the Sabbath and other key tenets of halachic (Jewish law) observance until the emergency has passed. Prayers for good health and for the complete and perfect healing of the ill are an ages-old aspect of Jewish tradition. But prayers must go hand-in-hand with availing oneself of medical science, including vaccination.

Vaccination injuries are real. According to HRSA:

How many petitions have been awarded compensation?
According to the CDC, from 2006 to 2017 over 3.4 billion doses of covered vaccines were distributed in the U.S. For petitions filed in this time period, 6,253 petitions were adjudicated by the Court, and of those 4,291 were compensated. This means for every 1 million doses of vaccine that were distributed, 1 individual was compensated.

Since 1988, over 20,522 petitions have been filed with the VICP. Over that 30-year time period, 17,772 petitions have been adjudicated, with 6,465 of those determined to be compensable, while 11,307 were dismissed. Total compensation paid over the life of the program is approximately $4.1 billion.

This is the wrong place to be defending anti-vaxxers. 1 compensated injury in every 1 million doses constitutes betting odds. Vaccines are safe and effective. Anyone who says different is spreading harmful anti-vaxx idiocy.

It's happened for years and it's been determined the benefits far outweighs everything.

Facts: Vaccinations save lives. Period.

For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die from it.

This, of course, doesn't include those who survive, but are permanently disabled.
