Tourists stunned as Notre-Dame cathedral statues fly above Paris

Paris (AFP)

Sixteen bronze statues briefly took to the skies over Paris after they were removed from the Notre-Dame cathedral to undergo restoration work.

Tourists at the world-famous landmark were left stunned on Thursday as the statues -- representing the 12 apostles and the four evangelists from the New Testament -- were lifted off the spire of the cathedral by crane.

"What's unique is that it's the first time we've seen them up close since they were set up by Viollet-le-Duc in the 1860s," Marie-Helene Didier, who is in charge of the renovation work, told AFP. ... "It's an exceptional event because we've brought the 16 statues down in a single day. It's a magical moment for everyone," she said.

Built between the years 1163 and 1345, Notre-Dame is one of the most popular tourist sites in Paris, drawing around 13 million people every year. ... Its spire, like the rest of the gothic edifice, is undergoing a 11-million-euro ($12.4-million) overhaul financed by the French state to repair damage inflicted by time, pollution and the weather.

In 1844, after having undergone structural and aesthetic damage during earlier Parisian political revolutions, the Notre Dame Cathedral was renovated under the direction of architect Viollet-le-Duc. The work done on the exterior of the cathedral, such as the addition of the new spire shown here, consisted mainly of the restoration of sculptures, gargoyles and the general façade of the monument. This photograph was taken in 1865 by Charles Marville, who became well-known for capturing images of the older Parisian quarters prior to urbanization.

was constructed in the 13th century, probably between 1220 and 1230. It was battered, weakened and bent by the wind over five centuries, and finally was removed in 1786.

... but the priceless artworks, if they cannot be rescued in time, are gone forever. Also the historic stained glass windows would be remade, but not in the same style & technique as before. They will be modern replacements, not the same.

This is an important piece of French history - European history - that's going up in smoke.

I am in tears over this. I am glad I got to see it in person, but there is nothing that can replace this beautiful cathedral. What happened here?
