Have any other Golfers, including the GOAT Nicklaus ... get Medals of Freedom ... just for winning A fucking golf tourney? I certainly don't believe so.
I applauded his win and was pulling for him, but if turns around and accepts this award, on these grounds, from this POtuS ... he will be dead to me.

(32,017 posts)Palmer and Nicholas got it from Bush. Charles Sifford got from Obama for golf. Many, many, other sports figures got it from presidents Kennedy thru Trump.

It's pretty much always traditionally been something of a lifetime achievement awards with athletes, and it's always been given to them well after their heyday in their career was over.
If it was me, I wouldn't want to be basically the only athlete considered special enough to have rec'd this honor while I'm still in the thick of my career (even if obviously it's close to being over).

(33,643 posts)Posthumously. Esp. the people that were athletes as opposed to coaches or announcers.
Giving one to an active professional athlete, at 43 y.o., a day after they won a tournament, even one as big as this win was for Tiger ... would be, I'm almost certain, a major break from 'how this sort of thing is normally done'.

(10,039 posts)a time limit was mentioned somewhere in the OP. Just seemed like a shitpost about giving an award to Tiger Woods.

I'm sure that these folks, as well as others, would be surprised to learn that they had retired long before they were awarded the Medal (or are dead).
The timing can be influenced by many things. President Obama announced that Yogi Berra would get the Medal not that long after Yogi died. Most of the time the Medal is not awarded posthumously.

(33,643 posts)I'm saying it would very irregular in the case of an athlete while still at the top of their game to get this honor awarded them.
What, Tiger is the one and only professional athlete that's ever been worthy enough to receive one while still in the thick of their career?
If I'm him, I'm saying 'Thanks but no thanks ... Jack and Arnie got theirs YEARS after they retired ... '
It's also pathetic for Trump to try to glom onto Tiger's moment right now ... kinda sickening really. He just HAS to get some o' that sweet attention.
NOT saying Tiger doesn't (eventually) deserve the Medal, okay?

(42,714 posts)Why is it okay for a musician or actor in the thick of their career to be awarded the medal but not an athlete. There is zero logic to that. And no one thinks Tiger, despite his Masters win, thanks he's "at the top of their game."
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)No other athlete got one that I see on the list while still totally within their professional career, and not as something that looks like a 'reward' handed out by POTUS the day after a big win. It's just not been done that way with athletes. This would be a highly irregular situation in which to give an athlete this award.
What, Tiger is so special, such a great American, that he's the only athlete who's deserved to get it while still competing professionally?
And I think he's cheapening the Medal by flinging it around under circumstances like this, IMHO.

One of the posters above asks "for playing golf"? Well, it was awarded to Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, so I guess so.
President Obama awarded it to more sports figures than any of his predecessors, including Michael Jordan, Yogi Berra, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, among others. He also awarded it to entertainment figures (as did his predecessors) including Loretta Lynn.
