Trump is apparently an expert at fighting Cathedral fires overseas, but when it comes to natural fires in American forests, he wants nothing to do with them.

Dropping six tons of water from the sky on an ancient building in a crowded city, bad idea:

As flames engulfed the historic Gothic structure, many wondered why airplanes were not dropping water on the inferno, as firefighters do to combat forest fires. But the cathedral's urban setting makes such a mission too dangerous: it would involve dropping perhaps 6 tons of water, an unsafe proposition in a densely populated city. The intervention could destroy the cathedral in the effort to save it.

France's civil defense agency tweeted that a large drop of water could cause the entire structure to collapse, and endanger the firefighters below.

And if you were, you would probably have consulted an expert before making a tweet. You would not have assumed that you know more about how to fight a fire than the experts.

This is the problem with Trump. What he says about any topic is what everyone out there without special knowledge of that topic thinks. His base, who tend to be ignorant, feel for the first time in their lives that their president thinks like them and speaks for them. I’m not sure how to fight this, frankly.

Key Points

President Donald Trump encourages France to use “flying water tankers” to put out a raging fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris as firefighters rushed to save one of the country’s most visited landmarks.
“So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris,” the president tweets. “Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!”
“If you hit that with tons of water from above, that’s going to collapse the entire structure and make the situation worse,” said Wayne McPartland, a retired New York City Fire Department battalion chief. “If you miss, you might hit civilians in the street.”

Fire breaks out at Notre Dame cathedral in Paris

President Donald Trump on Monday encouraged France to use “flying water tankers” to put out a raging fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris as firefighters rushed to save one of the country’s most visited landmarks and local officials called for those nearby to evacuate the scene.

“So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris,” the president wrote. “Perhaps flying water tankers could be used to put it out. Must act quickly!”

In a pair of tweets, France’s civil defense agency appeared to dismiss Trump’s suggestion.

“The drop of water by air on this type of building could indeed result in the collapse of the entire structure,” the agency said in French. “Alongside those ... who are currently doing the maximum to save #NotreDame.”

“Helicopter or airplane, the weight of the water and the intensity of the drop at low altitude could indeed weaken the structure of Notre-Dame and result in collateral damage to the buildings in the vicinity,” the agency added................................................

That is not how it works. Dropping thousands of pounds of water on a building, especially a structurally weak one, would cause as much damage as a fire.

Plus planes drop in a line...not ideal for a building.

Helicopters dropping water would also create just as much damage.

I'm sure that had a really, really, tremendously, really big, impact on the firefighters in France.

Why...until that tweet, many people were saying that there was no reason to act quickly at all.

“And I’ve been there, and I’ve seen it, and there’s no cathedral, I think I could say this, probably no cathedral in the world like it, it’s a terrible scene,” he continued. “They think it was caused by, at this moment, they don’t know, but they think it was caused by renovation. And I hope that’s the reason. Renovation, what’s that all about? But it’s a terrible site to behold. with that being said, I want to tell you that a lot of progress has been made by our country.”
