ParaNorman got applause at the end on a subtle gay issue

I won't play spoiler. At the end a quick mention (that went over kids heads) of a gay person in the film got a round of applause from behind me.
I was surprised. Pleasant surprise.

I normally suffer in silence with the whole children's film thing, but I really quite enjoyed ParaNorman.
