Can't a Dem Senator or Congressperson check to see if Trump is under audit?

We all know he is not but it would be nice to have it out there as fact that he is lying and the next time he says it, a reporter can say, "Why the fuck are you lying? That has been checked and we know for a fact your not under audit? Why all the lying sir?"

Reporters keep mentioning Cohen saying he isn't under audit but why not go find out officially?

No, because that's also confidential IRS information. The Velveteen Ocelot Apr 2019 #1
Seems like if it's legal for the HW&M committee to get his tax returns outright it would be also mr_lebowski Apr 2019 #2

in their purview to inquire whether he's under audit.

I mean, if the returns aren't private to them, how could the question of whether he's under audit ... be?

How it seems to me, anyway.

Which would be irrelevant, though, because there's nothing to stop a person from releasing them just because they're being audited. But keep in mind that the law requiring the IRS to turn that stuff over to Congress also says which committee chairpersons they can be given to, and even if the IRS complies, the returns still can't be made public.
