Armed men have bulldozed a mosque containing Sufi Muslim graves in the centre of the capital, Tripoli, in broad daylight, in what appeared to be Libya's most blatant sectarian attack since the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi.
Government officials condemned the demolition of the large mosque and blamed an armed group who, they said, viewed its graves and shrines to Sufi figures as unIslamic.
It was the second razing of a Sufi site in two days. Ultra-conservative Islamists wrecked Sufi shrines with bombs and another bulldozer and set fire to a mosque library in the city of Zlitan early on Friday, an official said.
Libya's rulers have struggled to control armed groups competing for power a year after Gaddafi's fall.

(954 posts)I hate to say it, but these people are going to have to think this sectarian nonsense through by themselves and on their own terms... and with their own blood. We can criticize them from afar, from the comfort of our own secular society (that is under attack from within), but the West can't expect to change the minds of these people and we certainly can't "force" our will with any lasting success.
We have to let the moderates from within that world rise up and win the arguments.
And if we try to completely finance them, it will only serve to undermine or weaken their credibility. We have got to find a post-colonial, post-liberalism (classical liberalism) approach to this.
Plus, we need to start cutting our $1 trillion defense/imperial spending.
