Japan's space agency says the Arctic Ocean's ice cover has shrunk to a record low.

Scientists at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency say their measurements show the ice covered 4.21 million square kilometers as of Friday. The previous record marked in September 2007 was at 4.25 million square kilometers.

JAXA says the Arctic ice is expected to shrink even more this year. It typically contracts every year in mid-to-late September.

Looks like this year will shatter all previous records and yet few seem to care. This is a serious canary-in-the-coal mine warning but our political leaders are ignoring it.
