Sri Lanka - Easter Sunday attack - 207 dead so far (updated)

<snip>
Sri Lanka's capital Colombo has been hit by at least two new blasts, hours after the country was struck by a series of six bombings on churches and hotels that killed at least 156 people and wounded about 400.

The seventh explosion occurred at a hotel near the national zoo in the capital, killing at least two more people, police said, while an eighth blast, caused by a suicide bomber, hit the suburb of Orugodawatta in the north of Colombo, police said.

The bomber detonated his explosives when police entered the residence to search it, a police source told AFP news agency. The explosion brought down the upper level of the home and killed three police officers, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Most of the victims were killed in three churches where worshippers were attending Easter Sunday services. Three other bombings struck luxury hotels - the Cinnamon Grand, Kingsbury and Shangri-La - located in the heart of Colombo, killing at least 35 foreigners.

The question is who did this

Sri Lanka's population practices a variety of religions. As of the 2011 census 70.2% of Sri Lankans were Theravada Buddhists, 12.6% were Hindus, 9.7% were Muslims (mainly Sunni) and 7.4% Christians (6.1% Roman Catholic and 1.3% other Christian).

Jingoistic nationalism is a global problem and people are turning on foreigners.
Things will only get worse.

That was a straight up ethnic/nationalist conflict that had religion as a fairly easy marker.

They killed others but they themselves saw no point in killing themselves. That way they'd be around for another go at killing others.

Don't see this as a big improvement, personally.

At least the suicides are self-punishing.

Or ethnic fanatlicism.

Men have gone to war and cut each other's throats because they couldn't agree as to what color banner or what bloodline they should live under, or which political system should determine who gets oppressed.

Historically it was bloodline and religion. Then, with the ethno-national identity movement started in Germany and which spread, we had more clearly organized ethnic warfare (not that this didn't happen for millennia before Romanticism unleashed that particular demon from Pandora's box). Then rank ideology came along and showed them all up, and even showed that it could ally itself with notions of ethnic identity.

God's most prided creation working it's ass off to destroy everything God created. No other species does this to it's own. I believe the gates to heaven have been locked with a huge "Wall" built around it and militia border patrols attacking, even raping Chritian Refugees fleeing hell being thrust upon them, from......humans. All these church bombings, shootings, burnings, done by Christians or other God cultists while victims were, wait for it, praying. Thoughts.....about prayers?
God not blessin MurKKKa, nor should he. Genecide while thumping the bible. Slavery while thumping the bible. Wars for profit while thumping the bible. Turning away the least of us, Chritian refugees seeking asylum while thumping the bible. Profiteering preachers with millions income while thumping the bible. Joel Osteen turning victims away from his clean church while thumping the bible. Religion!

How long have terror attacks been happening? What does it change? Humans are still doing human things, although probably with greater anxiety. After a bomb or shooting attack, how many survivors think, 'by golly, those guys have a point and I want to make sure they have a seat at the table.'

Bombers and shooters are mass murderers. Their agendas give them justification for their actions, but at the end of the day, they are killers satisfying their blood lust.

I pray for victims and survivors every day.

And ask where the hell Sri Lanka was and whether or not his base would care about the victims, before reacting. I.e. Christians killed, ill pretend to care. Muslims killed, I’m going golfing and ignoring it. And I am being completely serious, not trying to make light of a tragedy.

to at least 1940 when a New York Times article mentions the term in relation to German tactics. Less than two years later that newspaper referred to a Japanese kamikaze attempt on an American carrier as a 'suicide bombing.' "

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_attack

According to the Muslim Public Affairs Council, "...modern suicide bombings was introduced by Hezbullah in 1983 in Lebanon, and it was in Lebanon that this modus operandi was refined throughout the 1980s. The "Tamil Tigers...organization, currently fighting for an independent Tamil state, began carrying out suicide bombings in 1987 and has since perpetrated over 200 such attacks."

https://www.mpac.org/programs/anti-terrorism-campaign/islamic-views-regarding-terrorism-and-suicidem/the-real-origins-of-suicide-bombings.php

According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, "contemporary suicide bombing began in 1981 in Lebanon. However, it achieved worldwide notoriety in 1983, first with an attack against the U.S. embassy in Beirut that killed 63 people and then with simultaneous car bombings of U.S. and French military barracks, also in Beirut, that killed 299 more. These attacks, mounted by the Shīʿite Islamic group Hezbollah, were credited with forcing the withdrawal of Western military forces from Lebanon."

but there have been tensions with those sided with outsiders who promoted shock doctrine development as in exclusive hotel development in coastal areas that were Tamil communities.

You know there is dark humor in watching religious zealots of all faiths talk about peace while slaughtering the other religion. Damn we have failed as a species.

There was a warning posted by Sri Lankan police early this month saying a group may carry out suicide attacks against Catholic churches.

The letter, citing foreign intelligence officials, identified the group suspected of planning attacks as National Thowheeth Jama’ath. It named individual members of the group, which it said advocates spreading Islam by killing “nonbelievers.”

Bombing Catholic churches in Sri Lanka is related to a lone wolf white supremacist bombing in NZ? White supremacists would be bombing Hindus and Buddhists, not Catholics.
