The system worked for Watergate... Now? Not so much..

I do not wish to be dramatic. Far to British for that But I do think the West is at a crossroads. A very dangerous crossroads. At the start of WW2 there were only 11 democracies on the planet.... and as they say history repeats itself. We have to stop these truth and democracy stealers. From Trump, to Brexit, to Orban., to Putin etc and et al...Undermining democracy every day.

While there was still a partisan divide. Republicans stayed with Nixon right up until AG Jarworski subpoenaed the 64 tapes including the "smoking gun tape", but they reached their limit when they knew and knew that the public knew it was over. These days with Fox and the right wing echo chamber, there is a significant amount of the Republican constituency that have not heard ANYTHING that was in the Mueller Report that would implicate Trump. Nixon would have killed to have an entire narrative that was pushed to the public to convince them he was "not a crook". In fact it was Nixon and Roger Ailes that worked together to envision "GOP TV" to put out the conservative viewpoint which eventually developed into Fox News.

I think that the Democrats still need to proceed with investigations and work toward impeachment when the evidence mounts, which it will. It will be an uphill battle with the Fox zombies, but it needs to happen.

They were a lot like the Republicans today until the tape surfaced.

Republicans had a limit because everyone watched the same 3 news channels and read the same papers that were detailing the actual facts coming out of the investigation.

The difference today is that much of the Republican constituency has been fed lies by Fox and the Right wing media sphere as well as being conditioned to distrust any other media source so they actually believe that Trump is not guilty of anything and would likely see any Republican who actually did the correct thing as a traitor. Republicans turned on Nixon because they knew that Republicans knew Nixon was guilty and would make them pay at the polls for supporting a criminal. Today, the Republicans will pay if they don't support a criminal because to many Republicans, he is not a criminal.

Lock him up.

I like all of out senators who are running, they all have experience and are great on the issues, but I can't help feeling that we especially need their leadership in the Senate right now. I'm just hoping that the disgust with Trump is strong enough that we can take the Senate the next time around like we took the House last fall. *fingers crossed*

Repubs only jumped on board at the end when the whole party was going down if Dick didn't resign.

Also Ford and that stupid pardon is part of the reason we have Dump. Dick didn't actually pay for his crimes and he basically made a deal and got off scott free...we didn't learn from it and we didn't make enough clear rules to keep a crook like Dump from even considering running for any office.

Watergate swept problems under the rug, Reagon got away with Iran contra and Bush not only got away with two stolen elections, but also starting a war under false pretence.
