AP-GFK POLL: RAISE TAXES TO SAVE SOCIAL SECURITY

http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_SOCIAL_SECURITY_POLL?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-08-26-12-28-11

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Most Americans say go ahead and raise taxes if it will save Social Security benefits for future generations. And raise the retirement age, if you have to.

Both options are preferable to cutting monthly benefits, even for people who are years away from applying for them.

Those are the findings of a new Associated Press-GfK poll on public attitudes toward the nation's largest federal program.

Social Security is facing serious long-term financial problems. When given a choice on how to fix them, 53 percent of adults said they would rather raise taxes than cut benefits for future generations, according to the poll. Just 36 percent said they would cut benefits instead.

The results were similar when people were asked whether they would rather raise the retirement age or cut monthly payments for future generations - 53 percent said they would raise the retirement age, while 35 percent said they would cut monthly payments.

Raising the retirement age is a horrible idea. No jobs for the elderly, period. Even if they are well qualified.

9. People don't support raising the retirmement age. It's how they worded the question.

Given a choice between two disasterous options, raising the age or cutting payments, they chose one of the options.

But the other question in the poll shows they really don't support either one of these options and would lift the payroll tax cap instead.

take the cap off and it would be fixed. Raising the age would be nuts since most americans health is going by 65 (I plan to be healthy and work out but I know I am not the norm) its hard to find a job at any age but older is crazy because of health care...

So did Nixon..TWICE

Here's an interesting chart
http://www.milefoot.com/math/businessmath/taxes/fit.htm

SS/Medicare would be solvent ..and then some ..if:

they eliminated the upper amount for the cessation of deductions from income for FICA

and if they "earmarked"/created a new 10 year "surcharge"....a "transaction tax" on every wall street/stock-market/investment "trade".. It could a small, but it might generate a lot of money for the critical time between now and when most of the Boomers have passed on..
