Although it has not happened too often, since the beginning of the Trump Administration there have been some prominent Democrats who have claimed to long for the days of George W. Bush. They have also claimed that Bush never did the things Donald Trump has been doing. Bush may not have called the American press the enemy of the people, but he did launch a war on the press and a war on decent. In some ways Bush may actually have been worse than Trump.
Recently, I read the book Bill of Wrongs: The Executive Branch's Assault on America's Fundamental Rights, by Molly Ivins and Lou Dubose. It seems this is a book every Democrat should read so that people are reminded that George W. Bush was not a nicer version of Donald Trump. Bush may have launched a much bigger assault on our rights than Trump has ever tried. It is possible that it could be argued that Donald Trump is all talk and George W. Bush was all action when it came to taking people's rights.
Donald Trump may have called the American press the enemy of the people, but the Bush Adminstration actually wanted to prosecute members of the press. Bush's Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, tried to use the Espionage Act to prosecute reporters. AG Gonzales wanted to prosecute Eric Lichtblau and James Risen of the New York Times for revealing that the National Security Agency was illegally listening to the phones calls of American citizens. He also wanted to prosecute Dana Priest for revealing that the Central Intelligence Agency was illegally operating secret prisons in Europe.
The Bush Administration also cracked down on dissent. There were actually free speech zones during Bush's time in office. Bush also had local law enforcement remove and arrest protesters who attended, or attempted to attend Bush rallies. Bush also had people arrested for wearing anti-Bush shirts and holding anti-Bush signs at his rallies.
Finally, while the Bush Administration refused to conduct investigations that might have prevented the 9/11 attacks, it did investigate seemingly left leaning groups such as the Thomas Merton Center, which promoted Pacifism and Food Not Bombs, which gave food to the homeless. The Bush Administration also surveilled antiwar protesters at the University of California at Berkeley and at the University of California at Santa Cruz.
So, while Donald Trump might be a bigger loud mouth it was George W. Bush who seems to have launched a bigger assault on our rights.

(2,271 posts)Bush Jr was greed, criminality and hypocrisy wrapped up in a more palatable veneer than Trump. He set the playbook for Trump to steal our election. Will never forget Bush v Gore, worst Supreme Court decision in my lifetime.

(2,422 posts)unfortunately it took W six years. If he had picked another person as Veep he would have been another Gerald Ford type, imho. After the Dems kicked ass in the last midterms of his administration he kicked Cheney to the curb and brought in some noncrazy assholes like Robert Gates. If Cheney hadn't been there and it had been Gates instead of Rumsfeld it would have been less catastrophic.....maybe

(2,422 posts)to the likes of Cheney. If he had picked a different group of dickheads (Baker, Gates) from the get go the whole world might be different. Six years into his administration he started listening to that crowd. Didn't say it washed away his sins.

(4,111 posts)and the fact that we either didn't impeach those war criminals, or bring them up on charges of war crimes has contributed to the belief on the part of certain politicians that they can get away with anything..and why letting Trump get away with his crimes will continue the destruction of our democracy.

(12,869 posts)When Bush left office I wrote this poem for what I'd say to his face if I could:
I'd tell you to go fuck yourself
But that is much to kind
Because if you could perform that feat
You'd take pleasure in your behind
I'd like to say eat shit and die
But you deserve much more
You should suffer all the grief and pain
Of your misbegotten war
Though I can never make you think
Or feel, or understand
I'll take solace when you hear your name
Cursed throughout the land
From inside a lonely prison cell
Dark and bare and cold
Where every day you pay for your crimes
Until you're sick, heartbroken, and old
When you finally leave the earth
You fucked over oh so well
If there is a God and afterlife
You're going straight to hell

(13,181 posts)Dubya I's unnecessary and politically motivated Iraq War should never be forgotten. Bush Junior and Rove stampeded the country into Iraq during an election year, using the war as an issue. It was unbelievably low. And Bush Junior was the "decider" who decided to initiate the war itself. That war tore the Middle East apart, in part creating Al Quaeda in Iraq. Later AQI became ISIS. ISIS was a leading cause of terrorist attacks and mass refugee migration. In turn, that strengthened the paranoid white nationalism we are seeing. That gave birth to Trumpism and Brexitism among other maladies.
