I'm *NOT* making any direct comparisions here. But does this sound any bit familiar?

Just a teeny, tiny bit?

https://www.newsweek.com/hitler-incompetent-lazy-nazi-government-clown-show-opinion-1408136?utm_source=Facebook&utm_campaign=NewsweekFacebookSF&utm_medium=Social&fbclid=IwAR2yepucLLzei-ClEQSv-C1RXT7rI1SkcgeHRVBxKovnFFkNklOGp2UA6hM

Hitler was incredibly lazy. According to his aide Fritz Wiedemann, even when he was in Berlin he wouldn’t get out of bed until after 11 a.m., and wouldn’t do much before lunch other than read what the newspapers had to say about him, the press cuttings being dutifully delivered to him by Dietrich.

He was obsessed with the media and celebrity, and often seems to have viewed himself through that lens. He once described himself as "the greatest actor in Europe," and wrote to a friend, "I believe my life is the greatest novel in world history." In many of his personal habits he came across as strange or even childish—he would have regular naps during the day, he would bite his fingernails at the dinner table, and he had a remarkably sweet tooth that led him to eat "prodigious amounts of cake" and "put so many lumps of sugar in his cup that there was hardly any room for the tea."

He was deeply insecure about his own lack of knowledge, preferring to either ignore information that contradicted his preconceptions, or to lash out at the expertise of others. He hated being laughed at, but enjoyed it when other people were the butt of the joke (he would perform mocking impressions of people he disliked). But he also craved the approval of those he disdained, and his mood would quickly improve if a newspaper wrote something complimentary about him.

****

Hitler’s personal failings didn’t stop him having an uncanny instinct for political rhetoric that would gain mass appeal, and it turns out you don’t actually need to have a particularly competent or functional government to do terrible things.

With Julius Streicher playing to Rupert Murdoch role.

Julius Streicher (12 February 1885 – 16 October 1946) was a prominent member of the Nazi Party. He was the founder and publisher of the semi-pornographic and virulently antisemitic newspaper Der Stürmer, which became a central element of the Nazi propaganda machine. His publishing firm also released three antisemitic books for children, including the 1938 Der Giftpilz (translated into English as The Toadstool or The Poisonous Mushroom,[a] one of the most widespread pieces of propaganda, which warned about the supposed dangers Jews posed by using the metaphor of an attractive yet deadly mushroom. The publishing firm was financially very successful and made Streicher a multi-millionaire.[1]

15 Republicans underestimated him in the primaries, thinking he would implode with the next outrageous statement or tweet.

Democrats underestimated him as well - I kept hearing "never get in the way when you're opponent is making a mistake" - but, it allowed Trump to control the media narrative.

and, the media still doesn't know how to cover him. Plenty of politicians have lied or stretched the truth before, but nobody has ever been so completely divorced from reality and facts as Trump and his top staff.

Tue Apr 30, 2019, 04:22 PM
Apr 2019

People always seem to be hesitant to compare anyone to Hitler, or Stalin, or Mao because of the very real havoc and destruction they wrought upon the world. The reality is that they were just men with all of the failings listed. Clownish, weird, eccentric men that were insecure yet portrayed strength and were skilled with words and persuasion.

Trump sounds exactly like that. He is insecure, lazy, childish, has a taste for foods that are not healthy, and at least to his followers, has a way of persuasion. That doesn't mean that Trump will end up setting up a final solution or try to wage war for American dominance. We aren't in post WWI Germany with the Great Depression a starving population, and massive unrest happening. The point is that many megalomaniac leaders share personality traits.

The situation in the US is not the same as it was in Germany in the 1920's -30's or in China or Russia, Italy or Spain, which enabled totalitarian leaders to step in. Those countries were also more susceptible to dictators because of their history of Monarchical rule. Not to say that it cannot happen in the US. There are definite possibilities that we could head that way. I don't think with Trump because he is old, likely beginning to become senile, and not very smart. However, he is laying the ground work for some other, actually charismatic, strong leader to come in and really play havoc with our institutions.

Our democracy is holding, but it is being assailed from within and externally. Something major needs to happen to reset the situation and begin to repair the damage. During our crisis in the 1930's we had Roosevelt who came in and actually defied norms by having a 4 term Presidency. I am sure there were those who though it might have been or become a dictatorship. However, the programs that were put in place were meant to provide more help to more people to stave off the destruction of capitalism here. Trump is all about him and his own power, and eventually people will tire of him.

The comparison is still apt as far as the personality.

I think he did have some artistic talent. A lot of people disagree but his art wasn't half bad. He was partially Jewish so that is why he chose to not have kids. He used the poison on his poor dog to see if it would work when he needed to take it. So much for being a dog lover. When I was watching a history TV show about D-Day and it said that Hitler was taking a nap and had a "do not disturb" message for his aides. Also a major German commander was at a family birthday celebration so D-Day was allowed to go on as planned.
