I posted this almost 10 years ago. As the forced-birthers become more emboldened ...

I thought it might be time to re-visit it.

The original OP title was "I'll never forget the day my wife decided to have an "elective abortion".

"OK, I guess that technically she didn't decide, I did. You see, she was unconscious at the time. I've posted about this before, but the current debate about health care reform has brought out a host of individuals who claim that abortion is "elective" surgery, so I thought I would re-visit it.
Here's how the love of my life "elected" to have an abortion.
One night after dinner, my sweetheart went to the toilet. I still thank God that I didn't head downstairs to watch football. After a while I knocked on the door (at that time we were living in a one-bathroom townhouse), and received no answer. Eventually, I went in, and found my bride lying on the bathroom floor in a puddle of blood. We found out at the hospital that the child we were trying to have had been conceived as an ectopic pregnancy. We hadn't even know she was pregnant. A therapeutic abortion and removal of her right fallopian tube saved her life, while reducing by half our chance to have the children we so devoutly hoped for. The doctor told me that had we arrived thirty minutes later she might have bled to death.
So fuck you, Mr. Stupak. Fuck you Bill O'Reilly. Fuck every member of Congress who, had they been able, would have signed my wife's death warrant. I hope you never have to pick up the dead weight of a loved one, carry them out to the car, lay them down in the driveway so you can open the car door, and then strap your unconscious and hemorrhaging spouse into a seat. But if you do, I hope you learn from the experience.

(By the way, my wife and I have now have two amazing sons, ages 13 and 16, and they can't wait to be old enough to vote for a Democratic candidate.)"

Added as of 4/30/19: My boys are now 22 and 26, both staunch progressive Democrats, and the oldest one is getting ready to make me a grandpa!

that I returned to DU after a somewhat lengthy hiatus?
I determined that the internecine sniping and the occasional slapfests were not sufficiently distasteful to deprive myself of the company of genuinely kind and thoughtful people such as yourself and numerous others.

Have a great evening!

so many things can go wrong and deprive a woman of the ability to have children, and proper women's health care is an absolute must, including abortion.

A dear friend of mine was lucky to discover that this was happening to her due to the diligence of an astute OB/GYN. She didn't even know she was pregnant and had never heard the term "ectopic," none of us had in 1968. The procedure was scheduled immediately and we all breathed a sign of relief when it was over. Not one of us saw this as an abortion. We saw it as a life saving necessity.

Two years later she delivered a beautiful baby girl into this world.

Every situation is different, but I would venture to guess no abortion is something taken lightly, like these heathen KKKristians would like us to believe.

You pegged it right.."forced birthers". I refuse to use their smoke and mirror "pro-life" misnomer. They are no more pro-life than a suicide bomber....a Frank Luntz selected term. Pro-birth...force you to give birth....then fuck you and that damned kid of yours.

Much like immigration...every situation is different, and every one needs understanding and compassion. These heathens would like to have us believe that every undocumented immigrant is from a "shit hole country", is a criminal or deviant, and is here in your sacred front yard to steal what you have and rape and murder all your family. Truly a sick party of twisted, evil sons of bitches. There is no convincing or debating them. We simply have to outnumber them and blow over the top of this nation of morons.

Talking with the dRumpf cult is comparable to just telling an alcoholic to "just say no" to that next drink they are tempted with. How sad that we are really this fucked up as a country. We have ALWAYS been a nation with morons; I just never imagined it was the dire with so many of them.

our elsewhere. What if this happened in India or any of the countries whose health care support we've curtailed because they violate our lofty anti abortion mandate. I remember when I was dismayed at our spreading our awful diet and obesity internationally via Macdonald 's and KFC...trivial by comparison now. Thanks again and was glad to learn of the two boys you've raised!❤
