If the storm continues as now predicted, on Tuesday night the world will be watching a category 3 hurricane bearing down on New Orleans, exactly 7 years TO THE DAY that category 3 Katrina did.
No one will give a crap about the shenanigans going on in Tampa.

(5,819 posts)hits NOLA or anywhere else for that matter, no one will really give a crap about the DNC the following week either. What people will see is how a real POTUS reacts to a major disaster, as opposed to the clown that was occupying that office when Katrina hit. I sincerely hope for everyone's sake that a CAT 3 does not make landfall.

(14,656 posts)I don't wish this hurricane on any area but just yesterday I saw a report about how much is left undone since Katrina in New Orleans.

(14,656 posts)special techniques are being used to, I guess, shore up bare soil in vulerable spots and I took those to being levee related. So help me if there's a breach!!! So glad we have President Obama at the helm should matters worsen.

(269,144 posts)Word is that it will be a Cat 2 and it can land anywhere between Pensacola and the Texas border.

(7,769 posts)The new flood protection specs still aren't anywhere near 100 year hurricane event level.
Will it hold up to a Category 2 direct or glancing hit? I don't know. At least now more people will evacuate to higher ground, saving lives.
The Army Corps of Engineers was not given the task of getting the levees up to Cat 5 or stronger protection. (Thanks Bush & Co.)

(41,990 posts)No one really knows how well they'll hold but it's a better situation than when Katrina hit. This storm is unlikely to push as much water as Katrina did; it's much weaker. My sister, who's on the North Shore, says people are scared because there's a ton of PTSD in the city but for the most part they're doing what people do, boarding and securing and stocking up.
I have a certain amount of concern about the bangers who've moved into the city since the storm. But I'm not going to even speculate. Let's batten and see.

(135,425 posts)How about a brief power outage as he takes the stage, maybe....and some slight leakage of the roof of the venue onto his perfectly Brylcremed head, spattering his suit and eight hundred dollar shirt with odd stains?
Then, as delegates flee in terror, only to be ordered back to the venue by herders to listen to his stammering, hurried speech, drowned out by the noise of generators as he is harshly lit by klieg lights, the lights pop back on, just as he wraps up with his "Thank yew and Gawd Bless" bit.
Then, the storm hangs around--damaging nothing, but just making those GOP lives miserable. As it dissipates, it waters areas that have been shy of rain in a gentle fashion.
I hope the thing misses NOLA entirely. They just don't need a "test" right now.

(53,661 posts)Except that the state has been under strict GOP fundie rule since then. Why would God smite NOLA again?
Oh, yeah, there must be undeclared heathens still left in the area. Will they begin hunting them down?
Those guys down there can't get a break, or so it seems. Hoping for a strong north wind to blow that thing back to sea.
But the GOP probably prefers to elude media attention while they enact a platform that would terrify Stalin.
No, I don't like them.

(373 posts)States rights, and all that bull shit. Bush could not send in troops until Blanco gave him the ok, remember? We all watched people suffer and die for days until all the red tape crap was sorted out. Hopefully that has been fixed along with the levees.

^snip^
Emergency Powers
Over the years, Presidents have claimed to have emergency powers in times of crisis. These Inherent Powers have been used both at home and overseas. The most common use of emergency powers is to declare a state of emergency which allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to bypass normal administrative and jurisdictional rules. Declarations of emergency can also provide special federal aid such as during the Flood of 1993 along the Mississippi River or in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. President Abraham Lincoln used his emergency powers to suspend the writ of habeas corpus in Maryland during the American Civil War. President Harry Truman was also denied emergency powers by the Court in Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. v. Sawyer when he tried to nationalize the nation's steel mills.

And might I add, thank you Brownie for fucking it up, good job!
