First of all, I don't think that Republicans are going to allow any meaningful legislation to limit or outlaw abortion. The reason being is that it is their Number 1 GOTV issue. As proof, I offer up the reports of an anti-abortion law that passed under Bush. as reported by NPR, there was at least one Republican Congressman who was excited by the bill, but pointed out that it would be ruled unconstitutional because there was no provision for the health of the mother.
He was told to shut-up, sit-down, and vote for the bill.
Of course, it came before SCOTUS, and as predicted SCOTUS ruled it unconstitutional and told Congress exactly what simple changes should be made to make it Constitutional. Rather than fix the bill, Republicans then started spouting off about the Liberal SCOTUS "legislating from the bench" and how important it was to vote Republican.
BUT, they can get "small victories" and proclaim "our work isn't done".
I applaud the Dems for making this a "woman's issue" rather than a "rape" issue. We need to maintain that this just proves that Republicans are "anti-woman" rather making it about "rape/incest" abortion issues.
I don't have anything against a woman bringing a baby to term against the odds. I just don't think that Government has a RIGHT to tell her what to do. I'm advocating against Government intervention and for personal choice. Isn't that what Republicans SAY they are for?

(14,177 posts)But, many people are horrified at the thought of a woman having to carry a pregnancy to term from a rape conception. And many people are horrified that a daughter could be forced to carry her father's child to term. And many would be horrified if a 10 year old had to carry a pregnancy to term. And some people are less inclined to understand that a woman might want to abort because it would put a financial strain on her and/or her family. By strain I mean they can't afford her to take anytime off at all and the food bill is already high enough(pregnant women really do eat more, not a lot more, but over 9 mos it adds up) and a week in the hospital without insurance is very expensive. In any case it is easier to get sympathy for rape victims, incest victims, underage girls, and women who could die. But, trying to get the same sympathy for a woman in college that just can't afford to be pregnant, not quite as easy. But, IMO it should be.

(3,783 posts)and with Republican President, the chances of successful abortion law changes are high.
Also, while it used to be a GOTV tactic, in the last two years, they have been legislating it all around the country. Out of the piles of attempts, they managed to pass 131 changes to women's rights over their bodies.
This isn't the Bush Republican Party. (I know, that was bad enough.) This is the Tea Republican Party. And yes, they are true believers and/or corporatists hiding behind true believers.
