I read about it in Stars and Stripes and did a double-take, like, American soldiers are killing American students?

The Mexican government sent their version of the National Guard to ‘protect’ the American Embassy from any rioting Americans. Yes, Americans. I was in college at the time so I was just the right age, like the Kent State students, to create violence.

The thing to remember is the students were seen as the disrupters. Thus the presence of the National Guard at Kent State in the first place.

People nowadays forget that at one time the President of the United States actually ordered violence against anti-war protesters, turning peaceful actions into the riots that are now associated with the 60’s.

I was in high school. This was the first day I realized my government of angry fat old white men was actually trying to kill me. First day of the rest of my life. Not very much is different. Same angry old fat white men who would order me dead in a flash. Seems like yesterday. It could have been.

This was so shocking, whoever gave the OK to use real ammunition on those kids should have faced punishment.. Was it Rhodes, the Governor at the time?

Murdered them. I was so young. I didn't understand how they could have done that.

There was such hatred of young people against the Vietnam War at that time, and of young men with long hair, in particular.

Also four killed. One was not in the demonstration at all, but was almost a block away. He was a young new father, on his way home from work to his young wife and their newborn baby.
