https://www.cnn.com/2019/05/04/opinions/democrats-are-about-to-get-hammered-by-gop-zelizer/index.htmlFearing that the impeachment process will trigger a backlash akin to what Republicans faced in the late 1990s, Democrats are getting caught up in an investigative quagmire that is likely to result in cumbersome legal battles with the administration, uncooperative witnesses, meager information and ongoing news coverage about the clash between the branches rather than the actual substance of the evidence in the Mueller report.
At this rate, Democrats could realize their worst fears. They could wind up allowing these multiple investigations to keep dragging out without producing the kind of information that moves public opinion. Given that this is not an impeachment proceeding, Republicans will be able to find some political space to start claiming that Democrats are engaged in endless investigations that don't lead to an up or down vote.
At the same time, the media coverage of the battles over the investigation will overshadow discussions of policy issues favorable to the Democrats and Republicans will berate their opponents for only investigating rather than caring at all about good governance.
But the political risks are even worse than this. Senate Republicans are ready to begin two years of their own investigations. While Democrats are perpetually outraged, Republicans are perpetually partisan. As some senators such as Lindsay Graham warned during the Barr hearings, they will open up their own hearings into whether the Obama administration allowed for illegal "spying" into the 2016 Trump campaign.
They will ramp up discussions, which Barr seems to support, of "deep state" conspiracies and corrupt federal agents. And this is just the start. It is easy to imagine that White House officials are gearing up to launch other investigations as well.

(23,002 posts)They may be surprised come Monday. Congress isn't a trump inc employee. Accountability isnt just for street folk. Congress is the People's Branch and is spelled out in ARTICLE ONE, bc we take precedent of the three branches of govt. If they want to change the constitution, do it the right way.
We aren't just going to give it to them. No more passes.

(35,454 posts)The meme of the week. The traitor and Cons are apparently not facing a problem at all, just the, you know, Dems who can't be credited to walk and chew gum at the same time.

(6,044 posts)The Democrats need to be serious, do no grandstanding, be prepared in questioning anyone who appears, constantly and publicly remind the Republicans to do the same. Keep reinforcing their duty as a co equal branch of government with a responsibility to provide oversight.
Meanwhile they and we need to start discussing the new warfare and the fact that we need to get up to speed very fast in combating the attacks from Russia and any other countries poised to join in .

(7,142 posts)Democrats once again have gone halfway in their investigations. Republicans are going to attack the Democratic hearings (where no one is showing up) as witch hunts against trump that are only meant to attack Trump. With impeachment hearings Republicans can't call the hearings frivolous attacks on Trump because at the end there will be a vote to impeach, or not.
Meanwhile Republicans are carrying out their own investigations into the investigators. The corporate controlled M$M will certainly give more coverage to the Republican hearings since the Democratic hearings are not impeachment hearings.

With our without impeachment, I think it will be a long summer. Serenity now!

(15,290 posts)impeachment is the right thing to do right now, but CNN and MSNBC are not among them. The cable channels are pushing this idea for little other reason than they see it as ratings gold, especially if it would happen during the summer when Americans are out and forget about TV.
