General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIf we do not win the Senate we will accomplish very little to nothing. We must consider
what must be done to have a landslide win in 2020 that will allow sane policies to overcome recent idiocy.
There is no predicting what will happen between now and then. All that can be said is that it is going to get much worse in many areas. That might actually give us hope for victory.
Republican Rich Folks tend to overreach. That is just part of their greedy natures. There are walls that they will be hitting in the coming months.
Climate change is getting noticed even among Red State voters. Our food supply is going to be impacted and everyone eats. Tornado alley has moved east and millions are in the crosshairs in the deep south and the southeast.
Trade wars are raising prices and the economy is going to slow or take a serious hit. More Red State voters will start to notice failure to make America Great again economically.
A real war, or two, will probably be started. I believe this will be a "bridge too far". If we are put under Martial Law or some such National Emergency type situation we will see push back. Who knows what would happen? Watch out for nukes.
The fact that the Senate will be a hard gain makes the strategy clear: We must appeal to Red State Republican voters. I know this will be poohpoohed but the situation demands it. To win the Senate and have a future we must, as Democrats, turn Republican voters from darkness to light. It is the only way. I hope that we have some political geniuses working on the problem. If the Rich Party scores the Senate we are doomed to four years of frustration and gridlock. If the Rich Party (and Russia) gets four more years of Trump we are just doomed (condemned to dissolution).
I know that many here, for whatever reasons, do not want to appeal to those who voted for Trump. If that attitude prevails I believe there is not much hope. Events will be on our side. How much will the vast majority take before they come to their senses?

(3,750 posts)If, God forbid, the GOP gets the House back then any Dem President can look forward to impeachment almost immediately. Also, no SC judges or any other judges, for that matter. The Democrats must speak the scary truth to all voters and let the chips fall where they may. Tricky.

(56,828 posts)Do Democrats have good alternatives in Colorado to Hickenlooper?
How about in Montana without Bullock?
Does any Democrat in Maine have the name recognition to challenge Susan Collins, who is still somewhat popular there?
Mark Kelly seems to be a good option in Arizona, but I have not heard much since his announcement.
anybody challenging McConnell or Graham is a long-shot, but it must be done.
I know a lot of Republicans are running in solidly red states, but Donny is not a normal candidate and if it looks like he's losing and we get no last minute Comey letter, at least some of his base may stay home making a few of those red state senators vulnerable. (voters who decided in the last week in 2016 broke overwhelmingly to Trump)

I have been following opinion articles written by EJ Montini for decades.

Mark Kellys newfangled theory of 'political science'

Opinion: In his previous professions it was rely on the science, on the facts, or die. Not a bad philosophy to bring to government.
Mark Kelly is new to the business of running for public office.
This might explain why he appears to believe that political science is not an oxymoron, and that we can elect a real live political scientist.
Like, for example, him. A man entering politics who is dedicated to science. To facts.
Kelly has lived his life and trusted his life to science. He has a masters degree in engineering. He is a much decorated Naval aviator, having flown nearly 40 combat missions during Operation Desert Storm. He went on to become a NASA Space Shuttle pilot and commander.

(7,888 posts)a cliche. I agree. Democrats need to craft a unified method and show up on all media outlets. Kicking ass is our logo?

Beto is polling at 2%. He could beat Cornyn in TX.
Hickenlooper is polling at 1%. He could beat Gardner in CO.
Bullock is polling at 0%. He could beat Daines in MT.
Stacey Abrams isnt even running. She could beat Perdue in GA.
We *need* the Senate in 2020.

(22,597 posts)The Supreme Court will be gone for a generation after RGB is replaced because she is not immortal. Another 4 years will give Trump a chance to finish off the nation as we have known it.
It's about turnout, a massive turnout by the Left with no pouting about any pet candidate who didn't get the nomination and a massive turnout will help on all levels.

(4,007 posts)... vote straight ticket. We can hope that he's so villainous that even former Trump voters go straight ticket for Dems, giving us the Senate in states we didn't think we could win.
