Unbelievable.
From the Huffington Post:
<snip>
And so they said, you must be preparing for work, looking for work or actually working to qualify for this section. And the president has decided, through a statement to the states, were going to waive that anyway, despite the language of the bill. That opens the door to removing the serious work requirement that was in the bill. I disagree with that approach. There's no question in mind that the presidents action in this regard was calculated to build support for him among people he wants to have excited about his reelection, just as so many of the things hes done were designed to try to shore up his base.

(2,148 posts)Romney has no idea at all that the majority of welfare recipients are white. He's just using the usual "them lazy black people are getting all the welfare" scare tactic. Racist, through and through.

(17,505 posts)He also seems to have no idea what Obama's "statement to the state" says.
"There's no question in mind that the presidents action in this regard was calculated to build support for him ...."
And there is no question in my mind that you know the states themselves ASKED for flexibility and you know it, but are just playing the race card again.
How long are they gonna tell this lie?

Title: The Freedman's Bureau! An agency to keep the Negro in idleness at the expense of the white man. Twice vetoed by the President, and made a law by Congress. Support Congress & you support the Negro Sustain the President & you protect the white man
Date Created/Published: 1866.
Medium: 1 print : woodcut on wove paper ; 45.5 x 58.1 cm. (image)
Summary: One in a series of racist posters attacking Radical Republicans on the issue of black suffrage, issued during the Pennsylvania gubernatorial election of 1866. (See also "The Constitutional Amendment!," no. 1866-5.) The series advocates the election of Hiester Clymer, who ran for governor on a white-supremacy platform, supporting President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction policies. In this poster a black man lounges idly in the foreground as one white man ploughs his field and another chops wood. Accompanying labels are: "In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat thy bread," and "The white man must work to keep his children and pay his taxes." The black man wonders, "Whar is de use for me to work as long as dey make dese appropriations." Above in a cloud is an image of the "Freedman's Bureau! Negro Estimate of Freedom!" The bureau is pictured as a large domed building resembling the U.S. Capitol and is inscribed "Freedom and No Work." Its columns and walls are labeled, "Candy," "Rum, Gin, Whiskey," "Sugar Plums," "Indolence," "White Women," "Apathy," "White Sugar," "Idleness," "Fish Balls," "Clams," "Stews," and "Pies." At right is a table giving figures for the funds appropriated by Congress to support the bureau and information on the inequity of the bounties received by black and white veterans of the Civil War.

(95,337 posts)There was a ton of welfare recipients in our county. And this county in PA has voted very solidly republican the last millennium.
There are alot of people out there who are white and collect welfare and a large portion of these people live in rural parts of the state where the republican instills the 'Three Gs' into them - that democrats will take away God, take away their guns and make them all turn gay if they vote for democrats.'
This is utter bullshit that people assume all welfare recipients are minorities that vote democrats.

(9,350 posts)President Obama needs to hold a prime time press conference to discuss the facts regarding the welfare waivers and the $700 billion in Medicare savings. At the press conference President Obama should read the entire Health and Human Services (HHS) memo. After reading the memo he should explain how the $700 billion taken from Medicare does not affect benefits, but results from savings to Medicare through decreasing the increase in costs associated with Medicare.
Some on the right would not believe President Obama. However, independents probably would like explanations of each issue. They would probably also be willing to believe President Obama.
