A zoo in Illinois euthanized a flamingo this week after a child injured it by throwing a rock into its habitat, CNN reports.
The Miller Park Zoo in Bloomington was forced to put down the wading bird on Monday due to injuries it sustained from the incident, CNN reported. The bird had reportedly suffered from a broken leg as a result of the young boys actions.
"A juvenile guest accidentally injured a flamingo on Monday by skipping a rock into the habitat," Jay Tetzloff, who serves as the director of the citys parks and recreation and is superintendent of the zoo, told the local Pantagraph newspaper.

BLOOMINGTON A flamingo at Miller Park Zoo was euthanized Monday after it was struck by a rock.
"A juvenile guest accidentally injured a flamingo on Monday by skipping a rock into the habitat," Jay Tetzloff, director of the city-owned zoo and parks, recreation and cultural arts department, said in an email Tuesday afternoon.
"Unfortunately, staff determined the best course of action given the animal's injuries was to euthanize the bird," said Tezloff, adding a leg was broken by a rock.

"This was a truly unfortunate accident, and we are working with the juvenile's family to move forward," said Tetzloff, adding the zoo sees no need to change the layout of the exhibit.

(18,869 posts)wild animals can survive. More and more zoos are putting glass between the animals and the stupid people.

(7,418 posts)zoos will be more vital. What needs to happen is for actual reserves to expand and get more attention.
And this little brat's family should be billed for the flamingo's medical attention and maybe fined for his actions.

(18,869 posts)police them to protect the animals. I think there are some really successful reserves now. That would be ideal.
At the rate we are going the natural habitats all over the world are shrinking at an alarming rate. Wild animals can't survive that.
The whole idea of zoos is really changing. They are moving more and more to protecting breeding populations. The fact that people are allowed in is more to make money than anything else.
Most ofthe good zoos mow have nice habitats and the animals get adequate food and water and great veterinary care. They live way longer than they would in the wild.
