West Coaster here, so I'm not too familiar with NY weather patterns. Seems like NYC would be way outside the normal pathways of tornados, but I don't really know.

I just got done watching the tornado coverage in the Kansas City area. But that's in tornado alley, so it's not so unexpected. NYC? wow.

One thing to keep in mind is that large cities tend to mitigate against tornado formation, all other things being equal.

They are little baby ones, though. Nothing like the Midwest.

They will touch down and go on for a quarter mile or so leaving a very narrow path of destruction. Lots of trees and power lines down with maybe a roof or two.

What's really scary is a waterspout out on the ocean, since there's no place to hide. Think of it as a waterlogged tornado.
