(81,466 posts)I'll tell the story of my dear late father-in-law, a kindly doctor who reminded just about everybody who saw or dealt with him as a Marcus Welby type (from the affable and caring doctor character played by Robert Young in the popular TV series that bore the character's name).
Years ago, he recalled an incident in which he was driving through town one day when he spotted a young woman, collapsed on the sidewalk, hemmorhaging onto the pavement. He pulled over, went to check on her, and made an instant decision to bundle her up into the back of his car and drive her to the hospital. She'd had a back alley abortion. His arrival on the scene saved her life. He was generally conservative in his politics and had been against abortion. But he confessed that he felt compelled to become pro-choice after that experience, and realized that abortion should be safe and legal - whether or not he approved, personally, because he knew women would still try to get abortions whether they were legal and accessible or not. Wise man. No wonder his oldest son turned out that way.

(937 posts)Dr. Grimes took us students to a shuttered ward at LA County womens hospital. There were 2 long rows of old metal bed frames lined up along each wall. He explained to us that this was the septic ward. Pre-Roe, Women would start rolling in around 9 pm each night at hospitals like this all over the country. Young women bleeding out from a perforated uterus or septic from infections like gas gangrene. High mortality rates because by the time they would come in, they were almost dead. He explained when abortion is illegal, women dont stop having abortions. They are forced to go to back alley butchers and have a greater than 50% chance of dying. No one celebrates abortion. It must be safe and legal so women dont die. Do you know who never died in this ward? Men.
Never. Never. Never. We are not reopening the septic wards.
