Isbell, Earle and Simpson though are generally considered 'roots rock' or 'Americana'. Which are other ways of saying 'country-ish stuff with a liberal bent'.
The Byrd's 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo', featuring Gram Parsons, is kinda the original album of the genre.
Kacey Musgraves is a country singer who seems pretty dang liberal, and I don't get the feeling Brad Paisley (who's actually a damn good guitarist) is a wingnut either.

(33,643 posts)I could name-drop all night, I'm kinda a walking encyclopedia of 'country-like but non-wingnut' artists ... I'm big on the genre, as it were ... we have a little crowd of afficionados in the Music Appreciation forum
