The question of whether we stand with undocumented people and protect the basic tenets of a healthy society is for each of us to answer."

Jurors in the trial against humanitarian aid worker Scott Warren were unable to reach a verdict Tuesday, after two days of deliberation. Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorneys Office in Arizona meet again on July 2 to decide whether Warren should again tried before another jury.
Scott Warren was arrested by Border Patrol agents last year in Arizonas Sonoran Desert for allegedly providing food, water, beds, and clean clothes to undocumented immigrants. The government views Warrens good Samaritan actions as a felony. He faced up to 20 years in prison on charges of harboring and conspiring to transport undocumented immigrants if convicted which is prohibited under federal law.
Warren is a volunteer with No More Deaths, an organization that aims to reduce the number of migrants who die on the perilous journey from Central America and Mexico to the United States. They routinely leave water jugs in remote areas of the desert, recover dead bodies, and assist the injured and ill. Prosecutors in Warrens case, however, argue that he went too far in his kindness.
They were not injured. They were not sick. They were not resting and recuperating, prosecutor Anna Wright said Friday. They were taking their time to get to the place they wanted to get to with all the help they could possibly need.

I have just gotta to ask, if anyone on that jury thinks that if they were in that situation, being in desert and someone came to there aid, do they or would they really fucking care............................I think they would want the water...................and this case is costing the taxpayers thousands of dollars.....................................the fucking insanity.........................

(12,631 posts)Thats not how the justice system works. The jury had to measure the defendants behavior against a STATUTE. The statute in this case has to do with smuggling a person. So the jury had to decide whether the defendants behavior rose to the level of smuggling a person. Not what the jurors would have done in the situation, or even what Jesus would have done, but did defendants actions meet the provisions of the statute.
Please bring back Civics courses, before we have no democracy left.
And please, dont beat on me for pointing out what is the lawful basis for making decisions when one is a juror. Knowledge of current law must come before decisions can be made to change them. And knowledge doesnt imply agreement.

(12,631 posts)before you can nullify it. Otherwise, theres just anarchy.
There is no excuse, in my opinion, for ignorance, or worse, pretending ignorance to stir up the indignation of those who know nothing of law and government. Teach. Dont manipulate. Thats what the r.w. does. Should we be doing the same? And Im criticizing the news medium here, not necessarily the person who uncritically quotes it. This kind of pot-stirring is what causes contempt for all government, which does not serve society.

(1,535 posts)....out onto the desert sand, in front of thirsty asylum seekers is a crime and should the bullet headed boarder patrol and ICE agents be held accountable. I'd love to be on that jury, but I'd really like to see a UN investigation and trial of "Crimes Against Humanity".
