House panel passes 9/11 victims fund bill a day after Jon Stewart's emotional testimony

House panel passes 9/11 victims fund bill a day after Jon Stewart's emotional testimony

Updated on: June 12, 2019 / 2:50 PM / CBS News

The House Judiciary Committee unanimously passed a bill which would permanently reauthorize the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund Wednesday, the day after comedian Jon Stewart gave impassioned testimony in support of the bill in video that quickly went viral.

The bill will now go to the floor for a full vote in the House of Representatives, where it is likely to pass. It's unclear whether Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell will take up the bill in the Senate, although Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said Wednesday that he was "imploring, pleading, even begging" McConnell to bring the bill to the floor as soon as it passes in the House.

Stewart, the former host of "The Daily Show," gave emotional testimony before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties on Tuesday, at times broke down in tears and shouted at the lawmakers, calling them "shameful."

"I can't help but think what an incredible metaphor this room is ... a filled room of 9/11 first responders and in front of me, a nearly empty Congress. Sick and dying, they brought themselves down here to speak to no one ... shameful," said Stewart at the outset of his remarks. A little over half of the 14-member subcommittee members were present, mostly Democrats.

You've been a US Senator for 21 years. And you were a Member of Congress for 18 years before that. You don't implore, plead, or beg. You fucking demand. You get up on the floor of the Senate or on TV and you be as passionate as Jon Stewart in support of the bill. You're a fucking US Senator from New York. It was your constituents who died, and it is your constituents in need. We don't need imploring, pleading, or begging. We don't need decorum. We need you to stand up and be at least half the man Jon Stewart was yesterday.

It means you don't get dip unless the majority decides you can.

Moral of story: Primary GOP officeholders*. Do not primary Dem officeholders. Elect Democrats.

* Someone floated a rumor that a certain popular freshman Congresswoman might primary Chuck Schumer in the next election. That's nice -- split the vote and lose the seat.

She is losing supporters in her own district. TPTB in Congress will withdraw their support as well. If she primaries him, she will have to come up with money. The party won't support her financially.

Noisy is not the same thing as effective.

Minority. I get it. But he’s still the senior senator from NY with 40 years in Congress. So, no, begging is inappropriate.

That’s trump speech for some people say. Can we just let AOC get through her first term without Dems in and out of Congress pissing all over her?

and it's obvious it was a topic that got to him and touched him from the start. It must be tiring fighting for it again and again whenever the funding runs out. It really must be like a burden being lifted if that fight isn't necessary anymore.

I have on my wall a photo of FDR with his hand-written inscription "To (my grandfather) from his friend, Franklin Roosevelt."

Of course, I also have a photo of JFK with the inscription "To (DFW) with best wishes, John Kennedy." My dad knew Pierre Salinger, JFK's press secretary, and got Salinger to get JFK to inscribe this for my 11th birthday. That was in 1963.

Although I was also in the original Yankee Stadium for a fingernail biter when I was a kid. Detroit was up 4-3, and the Yankees were up in the bottom of the ninth with one on. Mickey Mantle was up and hit one into the bleachers. Yankees win, 5-4. The place went wild.

And my friends in Dallas DID sell this item for $2.8 million (just in case you ever wondered if there are still people with more money than common sense): https://sports.ha.com/itm/baseball/1952-topps-mickey-mantle-311-psa-mint-9/a/50003-80477.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515

When I was 15, an older friend had done the sound system for the Ambassador Theater, the short-lived D.C. version of the Fillmore East and West. One time, he was driving 3/4 of my then-band somewhere, and he asked if we had time for him to stop and do a sound-check for the evening concert (it was a Saturday). We said OK. When we got there, he said it was not the safest part of town, so we should bring our stuff inside. We did.

We were in this empty hall with great acoustics, and he said, hell, why don't you guys set up and play so I can do a real sound check. We said, hell yeah! We can say we played at the Ambassador! Jimi Hendrix had just played there a couple of weeks before.

So, we set up, just the three of us. The lead guitarist, the drummer, and me on bass and keyboards (think Doors instrumentation). We sounded great, of course. Then this guy appears out of nowhere and asks who in the world we are. We tell him, and then we ask who in the word he is. "I own the place." Oh. Oops, VERY sorry, we'll get outta your sight, we were just helping with the sound check, we didn't realize, etc etc. He said, no, that's OK. What are you guys doing tonight? Ummm, as of that moment, NOTHING!!!

So we had our test gig that night, and ended up opening for Junior Wells and the Chicago Blues Band, the original Line-up of Canned Heat, and the Youngbloods. We had to stop because he was scared of running afoul of the Musicians Union. At 15, I was 3 years too young to join.

Later on, in 1970, at a rock festival in southern France, I was introduced to Johnny Winter, who saw a plastic electric guitar I had bought for $40 in Stockholm just to have something light to play on while I was traveling through Europe. He said he HAD to have it, and asked if he could give me the $40 I had paid for it. Well, SURE!! He was just a prince of a guy. There was a real asshole in his band, too. His name was Rick Zehringer. He later changed his name to Rick Derringer, but I never saw him again after that.

Oh, and I have played live for Gerald Ford (as President) and Bill Clinton (as former President), and once did a 45 minute duet of Russian songs with Theodore Bikel.

Do I at least get a consolation prize?
