Cruz pitches Ocasio-Cortez on bill to make birth control available over the counter
By Justin Wise - 06/12/19 01:46 PM EDT
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is looking to join forces with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) on legislation that would make over-the-counter birth control legal.
The GOP Texas senator on Monday offered to team up with her to create a "simple, clean bill making birth control available over the counter," a move that comes just weeks after he offered to take up lobbyist reform with her.

(25,183 posts)If a Catholic pharmacist wanted to not provide birth control pills, he or she could simply refuse to carry them, and the local supermarket or even a convenience store could stock OTC pills to sell. The pharmacist would be off the hook.
That's what I think Cruz is going for.

(5,528 posts)I certainly agree that it should be over-the-counter.
Now if we can pair that with comprehensive, fact-based sex education for our youth, we might actually get somewhere.

(32,005 posts)throw the entire burden of cost back onto the woman? Will low income women be able to afford this?

(9,696 posts)Birth control pills are not like asprin, there is no one-size-fits-all version. Birth control pills have many side effects and need to be monitored, along with other medications a woman may be taking. Sometimes it's necessary for health reasons to either switch dosage or go to anotehr brand of the pills.
This is a bad idea on all fronts. A better idea would be making birth control FREE but still dispensed unders a doctors supervision.

(25,183 posts)if sold over the counter?
I used to take Protonix, which I got from a Canadian pharmacy for about a dollar a pill. Then, with my doctor's approval, I switched over to Nexium, which was available OTC. That cut my cost in half.
Now, there is a generic form of the underlying drug in Nexium, and it is even cheaper. Would birth control pills, which have been around in some form or another for about sixty years be cheaper if they were not handled by pharmacists?

(9,267 posts)I also think its an underhanded way to get the contraception requirement out of the ACA. Which means that LARCs (IUD, etc) and tubals will no longer be required to be covered by insurance at all (let alone free).

(10,137 posts)hormonal-based birth control pills should have some medical oversight. IUDs, in my experience the easiest form to use, do need to be inserted, so again some medical oversight is needed.
"Day after" treatments such as RU486 should be available as well.
