House panel votes to hold Barr, Ross in contempt over 2020 census citizenship questionBy JENNIFER HABERKORN
JUN 12, 2019 | 1:35 PM
A House panel on Wednesday voted to hold Atty. Gen. William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with subpoenas seeking information about the Trump administration's decision to include a citizenship question on the 2020 census.
It came hours after President Trump asserted executive privilege over the materials House Democrats are seeking...
The dispute comes ahead of the 2020 census, in which the Trump administration hopes to ask about the citizenship of members in every household. The citizenship question not included on all census forms since 1950 -- has strong implications for California, where officials fear it will undercount the states immigrant population and result in fewer congressional seats.

(33,345 posts)An Authoritarian has no respect for the structure of the Constitution.
Nixon would have been well-advised to refuse compliance, but he faced a real threat of conviction in the Senate. Trump can laugh at that notion.

(10,271 posts)The executive branch deciding it won't comply, has but 2 constitutional remedies:
Impeachment AND CONVICTION
the Will of We the People (the next election)
If the next election is already rigged , and there is no will to CONVICT...
THAT will require an uprising.

(33,345 posts)like most people living under authoritarians around the world, I don't believe americans are capable of it, despite their tough talk. especially when we're all employed.
it takes a long time under oppression until people say enough. look at sudan.

(1,124 posts)"Attorney General William Barr is going to prison. While he was able to escape prosecution for his role in the coverup of the Iran-Contra scandal, Barr made an incredibly poor calculation in thinking he could save Donald Trump. Perhaps Barr just wanted a return to the spotlight, but his actions prove that he is willing to give up any professional dignity he might have had left in order to temporarily protect a traitor to America."
The website, which features the picture (the Palmer Report) goes on to state:
"There is a good reason that Barr is doing Trumps bidding in his attempt to bury the Mueller Report. The theory of what worked in the past will work today no longer holds the same validity. When Barr first sold out the truth to save Bush and Reagan, information reached the masses at a much slower pace. When one relies on a daily (or weekly) newspaper, the spread of information happens at a snails pace. With the current technology, however, people are much more informed as to what is going on and that does not spell good things for Barr or Trump, and both will end up in prison when this is all said and done."

(3,011 posts)intention of giving up. They will force the dems to back down once the only option left to dems is arrest. Does anyone see Barr getting arrested? Of course not. The dems have rubber sticks. It's only worked in the past because there's never been such a lawless president before.
Please dems, prove me wrong!

(9,996 posts)Oddly enough, Texas has not objected to the citizenship questions, even though the state would likely lose House seats if undocumented people or even citizens with undocumented parents refused to return the census. But they are more concerned with ensuring permanent Republican control of the state legislature. The plan would be to use only voting age citizens to create districts as a way to create fewer Democratic leaning districts.

I hope the SC throws out this question, but with Gorsuch and Kavanaugh on the bench I have little faith that it will do so. They are pro Republican and will try to help them whenever possible with some nonsense about originalist thinking.

(22,006 posts)The third type of contempt powerCongresss dormant inherent contempt poweris rarely used in modern times. Inherent contempt was the mode employed by Congress to directly enforce contempt rulings under its own constitutional authority until criminal and civil contempt statutes were passed, and it remained in use into the twentieth century. Under inherent contempt proceedings, the House or Senate has its Sergeant-At-Arms, or deputy, take a person into custody for proceedings to be held in Congress.
