No one can understand why the witnesses to crimes are allowed to set the parameters for the testimony.

I'm not sure who decided on the private testimony. I do recall that the Dems were able to get documents from 2 banks because they had kept that move quiet, and let Trump bluster about the other 2 banks.
Could be the same thing here. God knows Hicks has been ...close...to the President.

not to put on a public reality TV show.

And no court is likely to force a witness to testify in public if they've agreed to testify under oath and on the record in private. So Congress can either take her testimony in private and release the transcript to the public or waste a lot of time trying to look tough and getting no tangible result.

Open hearings allow the people to see how people answer questions. This is how you change public opinion. In case you have not noticed reports and transcripts do not matter to most Americans. They do not change public opinion. They have to see it.

to testify in closed session? Did it spare her the embarrassment and humiliation on a public hearing? Was the public cheated in their right to assess the character of the witness and gauge the sort of people that Trump surrounds himself with?

The private nature of the testimony almost completely obliterates the power of the testimony to affect public opinion. Look....are the masses who did not read the Mueller report going to read tons of pages of Hicks' testimony? No! We need this to be dramatized in the living rooms of America to move the impeachment needle. This would be no better than the Mueller report.....what she is going to say is already in the Mueller report that 99% of the public has not read!

If this does not change, then her testimony will harm Trump no more than the Mueller report has.....meaning that it would not harm Trump's standing enough to get the masses behind impeachment. If it's private, it will be a disaster relative to moving the impeachment needle!

Why are the Democrats allowing her to dictate whether the testimony is public or private? If she were subpoenaed, she would have to show up and testify, irrespective of whether it would be televised or not. A person subpoenaed cannot say to a federal judge "It's okay to ignore the subpoena because the hearing will be televised. The fact that it is televised nullifies the power of Congress to enforce the subpoena." Again, she has no say over hearing procedures.

This seems like a needless cave!
