It all began when Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) tried to get the Senate to take up his bill that would legally require campaigns to go to the FBI if a foreign government or power offers information meant to influence a political campaign. The bill is in response to Russias nefarious interference in 2016, and is even more important in light of Trumps admission that he wouldnt report any attempts at foreign interference to the FBI.
But Republicans, led by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), immediately blocked Warners attempt to get a vote on the bill.
Im deeply disappointed that the majority has rejected this request before I can even lay out why I think its needed, Warner said on the Senate floor after Blackburns objection. This legislation is pretty simple, it would require any campaign that receives offers of assistance from an agent of a foreign government to report that offer of assistance to law enforcement.

(2,065 posts)1) The Republican leadership in the house and senate are in bed with the Russians - especially "Moscow Mitch" McConnel.
2) Because of broad demographic shifts in the electorate over the past few decades, towards less white and more black, brown and ethnic, it is getting harder and harder for a Republican to get elected president. Instead of doing the hard work of figuring out how to reinvent and rebrand conservatism to make it more appealing and relevant to a more diverse demographic, the Republicans have taken the easy way out, through vote purging, voter suppression, ID laws, gerrymandering, etc... In 2016, they also called in Russian help. For more on this please read my General Discussion posting about the Electoral College (link below):
