Jon Stewart: McConnell has 'never' dealt with 9/11 responders issue compassionately

Comedian Jon Stewart criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., on Sunday, saying the Republican lawmaker has never dealt with the issue of compensating 9/11 emergency responders compassionately, and has consistently obstructed efforts to ensure the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund is adequately supported.

"In terms of getting the 9/11 bills passed, Mitch McConnell has been the white whale on this," Stewart told Fox News Sunday, referring to the elusive whale in Moby Dick. "This has never been dealt with compassionately by Mitch McConnell."

Stewart said he was concerned that McConnell would use the extension legislation's popularity as a vehicle to pass other, less popular budget-related legislation, a tactic he accused the Senate leader of using in the past. He said it was only through "intense lobbying and public shaming" that McConnell was pressured into addressing the issue before.

The $7.4 billion fund has paid out more than $5 billion in benefits and has about 21,000 claims pending, but is scheduled to stop accepting new claims in 2020. Stewart wants the fund's "sunset" to be extended to the year 2090, making it effectively open-ended. He cited Congressional Budget Office figures to estimate that it would take $10-12 billion to fund the program over the next decade, but argued that the costs would go down quickly after that. He also noted that the average eligible responders were in their mid-50s now and that many are already suffering several health issues.

That's because they're not putting any money in McConnell's pocket.

When I first became aware of him, I accepted him as one of ours, wasn't particularly a fan of his humor.

Then I was *NON PLUSSED* when he went on CNN's Crossfire and ranted against the format, about how the Lib/Wingnut format was "DIVIDING" us, and then CNN cancelled it. I just didn't know what to think.

Then, what tore it for me was when he did his reaching out to the loathesome Glen BECkkk, who had staged a circus in D.C., with STEWART doing a "reaching out" counter event that was a pitiful post-Hippie crapfest like a Flower Child thing featuring the MythBuster dweebs, plus whatever soap bubble blowing festival crap. It was supposed to counter BecKKK, but was just stupid. As Bill MAHER said about STEWART, "If you're going to have an event, it needs to be ABOUT something."

But what finally tore it for me was when he subsequently went on to "reach out" to O'REILLY, about we should all get along. Third Way CRAP.

I still idolize COLBERT, despite how he went along with the "festival" with STEWART. But STEWART is dead to me.

I don't even care to get to the bottom of whatever his philosophy is and just *GAG* whenever he does his preaching thing on how we should get along or in this case his holier than thou/ higher ground cause is.
