*Cue images of Republicans calling various things "socialism"... like vaccinations, buying food before a potential blizzard, and, of course, not wanting to get shot in school.*

But That's Socialism!
Today's episode... Statehood for Puerto Rico
Democrats plan to make the District of Columbia a state and give them two Democratic Senators, Leader McConnell said, adding they would also make Puerto Rico a state which would give them two more Democratic Senators. They plan to expand the Supreme Court. So this is FULL BORE SOCIALISM on the march in the House, and, yeah, as long as I am Majority Leader in the Senate none of that stuff is going anywhere.
McConnell, who proudly posted the video clip (below) to his Twitter account, was not asked to defend his remarks, nor to explain how basic values of American democracy that 50 states currently enjoy and have since the founding of the Republic, are SOCIALISM.

(11,738 posts)My only question to McConnell would be, "Are you stupid or are you that cynical and contemptuous of people that you would say that?"
Socialism is a social and economic system whereby laborers on the means of production (I.E. collectivism or cooperative structures). It is about who owns capital and how the benefits of labor are distributed.
Socialism has nothing to do with statehood or representation in a congressional body although I am sure that it encompasses governing structures. McConnell is ridiculous and only said that on Ingraham's show because he knew he wouldn't get ANY kind of pushback.
Sadly, the aforementioned "idiots" who watch Ingraham's show will just nod in agreement to the spectacularly stupid comment.

(25,183 posts)does it take merely a majority in one or both houses of Congress to admit a territory to statehood? I was a wee lad when Alaska and Hawaii became full states.
Both of those places suffered the brunt of Japanese attacks in WWII, and statehood was probably seen as a recognition of that. I can't say for certain whether or not Puerto Rico would enjoy that kind of favor.
Shouldn't it at least be put to a vote there?

(58,785 posts)referendum, in 2017, showed the largest number by far, an overwhelming majority, supporting statehood. PR hasn't been able to stand on its own. Later that year Hurricane Maria and massive betrayal by the government and many mainlanders.
Interesting thought about HI and AK. Wartime gratitude and sympathy are lacking for PR, of course, but it also has some strategic value.

(15,805 posts)Don't give people who trend to vote for Democrats statehood, let them suffer as limited citizens rather than change the Republican platform to include everyone.
They'll keep their "socialism" for the wealth few, and use it in reverse to handout perks and tax breaks to the richest corporations, but no funding for programs that assist the little guy.
McConnell is the poster child for everything that's wrong with the GOP. Like every other Republican, he has never put the country before his own enrichment and advancement. He has set the example and lowered the bar for his party by denying or ignoring his oath of office to safeguard our founding principles over his own greed and quest for power.

(9,481 posts)DC has more people than Wyoming or Vermont, and barely less than Alaska or the Dakota's.
Puerto Rico would rank 29th in state populations if it were a state.
At the very least, they should wrap up DC with the other long-standing territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, American Samoa) and give them 2 senators and Representatives proportional to their combined population.

Was admitting Hawaii as a state in 1959 socialism? Using Mitchs reasoning it was?

(58,785 posts)(Might as well laugh.) Stocking up in case the roads aren't passable proves lack of self reliance because of nonexistent socialism. Uhuh.
Hopefully, McConnell's cynical manipulation of the worst of the right is continually offending many others. We're already a majority, so we don't need them all to finally break away, just for those who already have to be joined by others.
More, Mitch, more!
