"SNIP.....
California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) told Politico that the Republican Party is headed for the waste bin of history.
He noted that California Republicans were once a major force in his state, but have seen their power evaporate over the last two decades.
Said Newsom: America in 2019 is California in the 1990s. The xenophobia, the nativism, the fear of the other. Scapegoating. Talking down or past people. The hysteria. And so, were not going to put up with that. We are going to push back.

In the next several years, the proof will be in the pudding that a solidly Democratic-ruled state is the way to go! California will be the example for every state.

(5,403 posts)sums it up nicely.
Any political party that cuts loose from it's voter base and says it Knows Better, or just goes for the Power and Money but avoids the responsibility of their role, deserves to fade away and die in a corner somewhere, whimpering platitudes like 'Not Fair!' and 'What Went Wrong?'
. . . . patiently waiting for the Rebirth of American Politics. Me, a lot of Americans, and the rest of the world.

(578 posts)wrong. GOP will always be relevant since in this country you only have 2 choices. I made the mistake believing after Bush's disaster in '08 that it would be a longtime before we would ever have another republican president. Obviously we saw how that turned out in '16.
People have short term memories. Give it 8 more years of a Dem followed by Trump and they will forget again about how bad the republicans are.

(327 posts)In the UK, circa 1997, the same fate was predicted for the Tories, it came so close to becoming reality in Scotland.
After a decade or so out of power, they returned, with a vengeance. The destruction of Thatcherism forgotten. The electorate once more seduced by the lies, so long as the victims of Tory cruelty were going to be 'the other' they didn't care. The bastards are still back in power!
Now look at the wonderful job they're doing.
