(3,176 posts)...any of our illustrious Democratic candidates taken the Chained CPI problem head-on?
...I hope the Chained-CPI issue is hammered hard at the Democratic debates this week...this problem needs to be a front-and-center campaign issue...we need to know what everyone is thinking and planning to do about this...
...but I'll lay you even money it won't even be mentioned at the debates...

(704 posts)In a perfect democracy, people would rise up against this.
However, we have the Fox propaganda machine that cons stupid people into thinking this is good for them.

(8,090 posts)we all learned during the Obama years, compliments of a prolific poster, that chained Chained CPI is a GOOD thing!
We all also learned that Third Way was a good thing; now even they admit they were wrong:

It obviously hasn't hit Social Security benefits yet since everyone on SS just got a COLA increase of 3.8%.

(60,010 posts)It's a mad scheme. It's a humanity hating scheme.
The game is to drag the county...the world, if they can do it, back down to the "good ole days", where the workers were kept barely educated, barely fed, and fought each other for any jobs.
Dystopian as hell, promulgated by sadists...there is no other reason to deliberately try to destroy people's living standards..
and yet....Russia, China, the Middle east, have seen, and are seeing, the same ideology, over and over and over.
I think it might be a feature, not a bug, in humanity.

(3,803 posts)Fucking Republicans -- that's all I can say.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Courtesy of computers, information technology etc. We of course want to go to chained CPI because it is better for measuring.
However, it will tend to show that people tend to adjust and live the same even though the price of a few things go up. Which is to say when the price of chicken goes up people eat more hamburger, and vice versa.
Thats why Obama offered to trade CPI for other stuff when the Republicans were shutting down the government over the budget, but they knew it was a suckers deal.
The problem here is that the Republicans will use this to drop entitlement benefits and manipulate anyway they can to screw people over, instead of tweaking in other directions to make it all come out equal, as we wouldve under Democrats. As always the problem is the Republicans serving their anti-tax billionaires.
And as always the solution is to vote for Democrats. Put Democrats in control, have chained CPI because that is now the best way to calculate it, and itll be effectively as before.
One last note, those who did not vote Democrat last time should not be complaining.
Hoyt
(54,770 posts)on low end.
We are going to screw around with SS and get a mandated 20+% cut in early 2030s, if not sooner, perhaps worse if GOPers are in control. And lifting the cap is not going to solve the problem as too many think because it causes issues throughout the economy.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)to exploit the populace just need to figure out how. As for the GOP has been trying to destroy it since before it was even passed.
Because mainly of advances in technology, our production is so high that if income is only distributed even a little bit more equally, Social Security will never run dry. Thanks

(10,207 posts)When the price of red meat goes higher, I do Not buy chicken. I keep buying red meat but less and less of it. It's NOT as if Anyone just eats red meat and when it is overpriced they switch to a different type of meat.
We all buy all the meats and buy less and less as the prices go higher and higher. How is pretending I switched to buying more ground beef instead of steak because you priced me out of the market a more accurate measure of the cost to survive? It's a hoax. People are not robots. We don't give up eating our favorite foods because of prices.
It's just another scam by the rich elite capitalist to duck you over and take back the money you already spent on your own Social Security. Your Social Security that they took out of your wages, is now going into some fat rich guys pocket. It should have gone to you.

(22,166 posts)they did this/how were they able to claim this (when they passed the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Bill, claiming that they'd paid for the bill too). Now I understand. If I'm not mistaken, these benefits will come out of future retiree benefits, not those who are getting benefits now. Also, in 2025, everything reverts back to its original state (the provisions of the 2017 tax cut and jobs bill sunset and revert back to pre-existing law), except the reduction in corporate tax levels. Figures.
Note...I noticed that the republicans when they put out a flyer on this tax proposal back in 2017, all they said was 'chained CPI' and not one more word. They didn't elaborate one bit what chained CPI was or the impact it would have on SS benefits. They went on and on about labor underpaying their fair share of overall taxes, blah blah blah. This article was from the taxfoundation.org, a very biased org. and misleading name. It's a front for republican analyzers/soothsayers. ...
The tax cuts' increase to the debt means that budget-conscious Republicans have done an about-face. The party fought hard to pass sequestration. In 2011, some members even threatened to default on the debt rather than add to it. Now they say that the tax cuts would boost the economy so much that the additional revenues would offset the tax cuts. Of course we all know how wrong they were on this...

What the hell kind of person gets up in the morning with the idea of making life miserable for his fellow citizens?

(430 posts)It may be to you and 534 others who won't suffer one god damned bit because of this.
You want to wait until 2020 for an election that is questionable?
This piece of info shows that WE AMERICANS who don't make $174,000 a year plus expenses plus lifetime health care plus better retirement than 80% of us make in our lifetimes shows,,,
WE CAN'T WAIT a year and a half for an election!!!
Many of us won't be around in 2020 because YOU and the Blue Dog Asshole Democrats seem more concerned about your and their connections being lost from those who give you big money.
For every American who dies over the next year because of reduced health care, who dies because they can't afford even the basic necessities of life, who dies because business charges too much for needed services, who dies because YOU can afford the cost of goods due to increased tariffs that WE can't, for every child who suffers and/or dies because YOU want to wait to "do the right thing" while this piece of shit has another year to kill more Americans, it's YOUR legacy.
And I really don't know whether you really, truly care. That's the kind of Hopelessness we Americans who aren't as well off as you D.C., Media and Business Elites are have to live with.
Live with that, if you can.

(36,342 posts)They can choose to be happy and have a positive outlook on life or they can choose to be angry and miserable. I prefer to be happy.
Back when I was a contractor, some of the happiest people I met were quite poor. Some of the most miserable were well off. And the opposite was also true. How much or how little one had didn't seem to have an impact on how cheerful or miserable they were.
Thanks for the compliment. I have read many of your posts over the years and while you may not think it, I agree with what you say much of the time. You are in that group of DUers I consider to be level-headed.
