US POSTAL SERVICE: Plans To Slash Worker Benefits, This Week in 'The War On Workers'

Daily Kos, 6/22/19. Congress has put strict limits on the U.S. Postal Service to prevent it from entering the 21st century or competing with private businesses, and now the Postal Service wants Congress to let it compete in the race to the bottom. HuffPost’s Arthur Delaney and Dave Jamieson reported this week on internal documents proposing that Congress allow the Postal Service to save money by cutting worker benefits and expanding its temp workforce.

Postal workers would lose retirement security under the plan, with new workers shifted from a pension to a 401(k) model and existing workers’ pension contributions raised (money that would come out of their take-home pay). Retired workers’ health care would also see changes, and active workers would likely lose paid leave.

The addition of more people in the “non-career workforce,” AKA temps, would come on top of the fact that the agency “has already added 37,000 non-career employees since 2007, while shedding nearly 200,000 career employees through attrition, according to the document.”

And, of course, the Postal Service continues to look at cutting back on deliveries as another way to save money … while setting off a downward spiral as reduced services lead to reduced reliability and demand. - More...

So, Congress is going to allow the USPS to operate in the same manner as dumpie's cabinet...all temps for easier expendability and lower cost of benefits. Follows in the pattern of dumpie's "Acting {this}" and "Acting {that}". that don't require Senate confirmation.

The fish rots from the head.

The GOP keeps on saying they want government to run like a business.

Then they try to kill all the parts of it that do.

The Democrats in congress will go for this. The postal service needs to be reformed so it can compete.

SCAPEGOATING UNIONS FOR THE POSTAL SERVICE’S PHONY CRISIS

By Brian Wakamo, as published at Inequality.org
Blame it on the unions. When corporations, governments, or public agencies are facing financial challenges, this is often the default explanation.
We saw this knee jerk response at a recent Senate hearing on the U.S. Postal Service. The Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs called the March 12 hearing to discuss recommendations from a task force appointed by President Trump that include cutting or privatizing various postal services, increasing delivery prices, and — you guessed it — eliminating employees’ rights to collective bargaining.

NOTHING is said about reduction in Management at Postal Service. I worked for USPS for well over 20 years. I remember one 'old-timer' telling me a story that when "Carvin Marvin", Postmaster General Marvin Runyon ran the Postal Service during the 1990's, L'Enfant Plaza (USPS Headquarters had FLOORS of empty office space. He told me that the elevator doors would open, and there was NOTHING.

But, as soon as the USPS hired from within Postal Service ranks for the next Postmaster General, which also meant that all of his 'lackeys' followed, when said USPS Employee next visited L'Enfant Plaza, the cubicle farm was in FULL FORCE! Each and every floor FULL of new faces.

You hear of USPS downsizing the folks WHO ACTUALLY DO THE WORK, who actually generate the revenue, but NEVER hear anything about cutting back on the paper pushers, the ones who do nothing more than soak up the profits.

I believe it's time for me to research who's on the Committee for USPS at Senate and House of Representatives and request USPS start from the top next time they want to cut jobs.

the USPS fund pensions for WORKERS NOT YET BORN, something like 40 years ahead from the present. The money's there and it's a burden for the service to pay this stipend out of its budget.

Of the republicans trying to kill the post office is it hurts the republican rural voters the most if small offices get shut down

I dont understand why republicans in those states are for this.

All i can say is they are taking a wonderfully run department and ruining to the ground.

are donating HUGE sums to their re-election campaigns to privatize the Postal Service. Hope everyone who reads this realizes, the USPS is the ONLY Federal Government Agency that MAKES MONEY! THE ONLY ONE! Plus, USPS is the ONLY Federal Agency named in the Constitution. In order to Privatize, or have less than 6 day delivery, would require a Congressional Change. You can't get Mitch to do anything at the moment.
