However...
Here's a side by side of "the heavily armed militia laying siege" outside the Capitol to prevent a vote on a climate change bill vs the actual timber industry workers calmly protesting logging restrictions.

(22,913 posts)Regardless of how inaccurate their portrayal of events was, The Oregon State Republican Party is literally expressing support for the idea of a heavily armed militia laying siege to the state capital due to the actions of a duly elected majority of State representatives.

(2,444 posts)Where are the militia protecting the GOP legislators? Are they in Idaho preventing the state police from bringing them back to Oregon?

(13,524 posts)And that pic is from a timber worker protest. No militia.
Omg the Oregon GOP is using a fake image -- these are actually *timber industry workers* protesting logging restrictions at the Capitol, not militia protesting a climate bill.

(3,145 posts)"Here's your 'heavily armed militia' hyuk, hyuk, hyuk"
They're trying to make the Dems look like spineless cowards hiding from loggers and such under the guise of fearing "heavily armed militias".
Sad thing is it looks like Dems fell for it.

(136 posts)Should the Democratic party just ignore them? When you "trigger" someone in real life it could have real consequences. I'm not sure why democrats don't put it up for a vote. If it can't pass here then maybe we deserve to ride this climate change down into oblivion. This isn't about politics, it's about FUCKING SURVIVAL.

(12,618 posts)The State Police recommended the closing due to actual, verifiable threats made by a Republican state senator and right wing militias. This is just grandstanding by the right, doing what they always do: make threats of violence, and then try and pretend they were only joking and make anybody who reacts look like an idiot.
What we SHOULD NOT DO, is fall for that act once again. Call it for what it is, a form of terrorism.

(1,414 posts)this is just another example among the many that we have no working government. What we have is a party of lunatic nazi thugs and another party with the ill conceived belief that compromise is possible with the former. The GOP is not the opposition party, it is an enemy.

Oregons state Republican party on Saturday and Sunday mocked state Senate Democrats for their concerns over a militia threat amid an ongoing partisan battle over a sweeping climate change bill.
Heavily armed militia lays siege to Oregons Capitol as Senate Democrats cower in fear, the partys Twitter account snarked with a photo of regular-looking protesters in front of the capitol building.
Except one thing: That photo was taken on Wednesday, not Saturday, the day Democrats were warned that right-wing militias would arrive at the capitol building to protest the bill.
In response to the credible threat, the Democratic caucus decided to cancel Saturdays session on the bill and meet on Sunday instead ...

SALEM, Ore.Law-enforcement officials closed the state Capitol on Saturday, following threats from militia groups that were made while a partisan showdown has halted all activity in the Oregon Senate.
The State Police Superintendent just informed the Senate president of a credible threat from militia groups coming to the Capitol tomorrow, read a text sent out to senators on Friday that was shared with The Wall Street Journal. The Superintendent strongly recommends that no one come to the Capitol.
Oregon State Police said Saturday they were monitoring threats and had closed the Capitol entirely.
The safety of legislators, staff and citizen visitors could be compromised if certain threatened behaviors were realized, said Tim Fox, a captain with the Oregon state police ...

The Oregon Senate was unable to reach a quorum during their brief floor session Sunday morning as Republican senators continued their unexcused absence from the Capitol.
Democratic senators said Republicans have not returned their calls and even top lawmakers don't know where negotiations stand to bring Republicans back into the building.
We dont have any indication that they have plans to return at this point," Senate Democratic Leader Ginny Burdick, D-Portland, said. "Tomorrow is an actual work day and they need to come back to work."
Around 150 protesters showed up Sunday morning amid an unusually large police presence at the Capitol, one day after a scheduled floor session was canceled when Oregon State Police identified a credible threat from militia groups ...

... Were not gonna get a quorum, Senate President Peter Courtney, D-Salem, said, before gaveling out until 10 a.m. Monday.
We have 18, Courtney said, referring to the Democrats assembled on the Senate floor, some wearing jeans and other casual clothes. Everybody knows we need two more.
Democrats need a quorum of 20 members to conduct business. Republicans walked out of the Capitol last week to block a scheduled vote on a controversial climate change bill, House Bill 2020, which would put a cap on greenhouse gas emissions in the state ...
