Jake Tapper Pushes AOC on Concentration Camp Comments: Is That What You Called Them When Obama Was President?
By Caleb HoweJun 27th, 2019, 6:21 pm
When Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez referred to ICE detention facilities as concentration camps recently, she caused a huge and continuing controversy in which she has tripled and quadrupled down despite negative reactions from the right and even some on the left.
On Twitter Wednesday night, the freshman Rep. tweeted again about it, saying that she is calling them what they are. CNNs Jake Tapper pressed AOC on that topic in an interview on Thursdays The Lead.
Two questions here, said Tapper after reading the Tweet. One, youre taking credit for calling these camps, detention centers youre taking credit for those developments by using the term Concentration camp. And two, what do you say to Americans, especially survivors of the Holocaust or individuals who are related to survivors of the Holocaust who say, look, academically youre right, the term concentration camp did not necessarily mean death camp, but colloquially, when most people hear it, they think death camp, they think, Holocaust. And youre undermining your argument and youre hurting us. Youre hurting our feelings, hurting our emotions, hurting our memories.'
What do you say to those Holocaust survivors? he asked.
Absolutely, said Ocasio-Cortez for some reason. Well, you know, I have many in my district and our Jewish community has kind of rallied around this issue, because when we talk about concentration camps, if we do not also talk about Japanese internment, if we dont talk about the Boer war, if we dont talk about the many times this has happened in the history of humanity, then we also erase the suffering of those people.

Blaming Obama is the Republican talking point, and Tapper works for corporate media.

(16,189 posts)But with GOP they allow weaseling out of responsibility for actual policies or they ask the question as Democrats would say that... thereby turning it into mere partisan politics.
They dont ask a Republican what are YOU going to do about this cruel policy? Or ask the world sees this as Americas shame, how will you stop Trump from dragging the country down to the level of dictators and human rights abusers?
You cross a border and get arrested and your kids taken from you? Thats iron Curtain stuff.

(82,849 posts)I'm not too concerned with Rep. Ocasio-Cortez; she is a principled person who speaks very clearly on what she thinks and believes. Tapper's questions aren't going to faze her in the least. She can handle herself.
But when is Tapper going to bore in on Trump and his administration folks, demanding they explain why they're running concentration camps? Oh, he can call them something else if he's so concerned about the feelings of the remaining Holocaust survivors (he isn't), but when is he going to use his platform to buttonhole the authors of this atrocity?

(52,307 posts)that's the key distinction. my mother is a holocaust survivor, and relatives were killed by nazis, but i'm not dishonoring any of that by acknowledging that the holocaust was not a singular, unique moment in world history.
genocides happen all over the world and throughout history, and we need to be vigilant.
we dishonor victims of the holocaust when we allow distinctions between various paths to genocide to blind us to the fact that we're on a path to genocide.
no two paths to genocide are every the same. donald the rapist is not going to sport a square mustache or an armband. but such distinctions don't matter to the broader picture. he consistently dehumanizes non-whites, particularly immigrants on the southern border (but never immigrants on the northern border or who fly in; gee, i wonder why). he is deliberately creating conditions that are cruel and unhealthy and possibly lethal in order to punish them for coming to america and to deter others from doing the same.
just because germany attacked people who were already there legitimately instead, or eventually turned concentration camps into death camps doesn't really matter.
the point is that donald the rapist is putting us on a path to genocide and the concentration camps he is using is a horrific part of that.
most important, we should be trying to improve the situation for these immigrants rather than having a stupid debate over what term to call their situation.

(7,813 posts)is a blatant and unrepentant reichwing writer and puts the worst possible spin in every article. For example, the link on the word some in "some on the left" is something Bill Maher said. I like listening to Maher and I agree with much of what he says, but he is hardly an official spokesman for the left.
As for Tapper, Senator Harris was absolutely right last night when she asked if one of her questions was ever directed at Trump (we all know it was not). Media asks different questions depending on the interviewee's political party and they let rethugs skate by with softballs so soft it would be better to call them Nerfs.
